Can anyone tell me how much of a commute it is from Columbia MD to Arlington? And if it's a good idea. I will be taking an offer in Arlington, but would like to live in MD. I've lived in VA for almost 15 years and don't really want to live there anymore. I visited Columbia once and liked it. I have 3 children and want to settle somewhere with good schools. I'm geographically a single parent because my husband and I decided for me to settle somewhere with the children instead of moving around with him every few years. Within the past 12 months we moved twice and have one more move a few months from now. So any advice about the MD that is close to Arlington would be appreciated.

I lived in the DC metro for many years and would say no way on a commute from Columbia to Arlington. I wouldn't want to even guess the commute time ...hour and a half? If you're looking for good schools and commuting to Arlington from Maryland, the obvious first choice would be Bethesda which is closest and has excellent schools. Another option that's a bit further out (and a bit more affordable) is Rockville which has similarly excellent schools.
Yikes. Move to NoVa, it's just not worth it unless you want to spend hours sitting in your car. Without traffic it probably would be OK but it's rarely ever not traffic around here.
Post in the Northern Virginia forum, you'll obviously get more responses.
No way, ridiculous commute. You have children. You don't want to be an hour and longer away from them during the school day. What if something happens and you have to pick one of them up during the day- it's just too far to get to them quickly.
I would seriously look for housing near Arlington. Things would be different if you had a spouse near their schools, but when it's just you alone, you have to think of the kids.
