I wouldn't call Sacramento the most important city in California, either.

The Bay Area includes both. And by the way its called a CSA.

This is by far the fairest way to compare like areas in the US. It removes any doubt of any places part of that city's area of influence being left out. And it also delineates the true size of a city's economy. It also allows us to examine the economic and cultural contributione each place makes to the nation and the world.

A CSA ranking by "Importance"(Whatever the hell that means) would look something like this..
1 New York
2 Los Angeles
3-tie Chicago, SF and DC
6 Houston

These 6 alone account for nearly $4 Trillion of the national GDP and they are the centers for the most vital components of today's economy. They also affect us culturally, politically and socially more than anywhere else.

What happens in these places are felt everywhere else and are eventually implemented into the lives of people all over the country.
You said Metro area, go back and look at your post. The Bay Area is divided into the 2 metro areas I listed.

Combined Statistical Areas (CSAs) are different.
If you are going to list by GDP then the San Fran/San Jose CSA is number 5 on the list.
The top ten are:

Combined Statistical Area/ Total Gross Product($150B+)
New York-Newark-Bridgeport, NY-NJ-CT-PA $1.284 Trillion
Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana, CA $825.3 Billion
Washington-Baltimore-Hagerstown, DC-MD-VA-WV $500.0 Billion
Chicago-Naperville-Michigan City, IL-IN-WI $490.9 Billion
San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland, CA $475.5 Billion
Boston-Worcester-Manchester, MA-RI-NH $383.8 Billion
Houston-Baytown-Huntsville, TX $344.5 Billion
Dallas-Ft Worth, TX $341.5 Billion
Philadelphia-Camden-Vineland, PA-NJ-DE-MD $330.0 Billion
Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Gainesville, GA-AL $262.6 Billion

Some of these CSAs include parts of up to four states

I thought the original post asked for the 5 most important cities. I guess it is now regions. good job altering the thread Monty!

Um, the NY MSA covers 3 states. It makes no difference if there is a cohesive relationship that warrants being combined.

If by that, you acknowledge that the true nature of 'importance' has been defined, then I do take credit most gladly.

Umm, it says NY, CT, NJ, PA and what cohesiveness spreads from the Del-Water Gap to Bridgeport?

That area is interdependent as far as employment. Meaning their economies are tied together. Physical boundaries are less important.
