In Massachusetts most grocery stores don't sell any type of alcohol. It's only a small number of flagship grocery stores that have a liquor licence where they can sell alcohol. All of the grocery stores close to me don't sell any alcohol. I don't exactly know the law but I believe that Mass only lets grocery chains have a small number of liquor licences each.
Wow I never realized this was a luxury in comparison to other states. Liquor aisles usually take up the last few aisles of any supermarket without any effort to hide them here in CA. Only the most expensive bottles are either locked away in a small glass encasings or just have a small lock on the bottle.
Illinois you can buy anything any the grocery store. Minnesota - they act like its the 1870s.
I was completely bewildered by the fact that you can buy wine and spirits in gas stations in Illinois. Totally bizarre, alien concept in Minnesota.
Most supermarkets in the Twin Cities have an attached liquor store, meeting the legal requirement that establishments selling wine and spirits be an independent, licensed business. Even places like Super Target and Trader Joe's have separate entrances for their liquor selections which are technically separate businesses.
Washington State went to supermarket sales in 2012. However, it is much more expensive than it was when the State ran the show. To the point that folks in almost all border locations make runs to Idaho or Oregon, which hurts the State in the long run.

Same here in AZ. The supermarket I shop at actually has the liquor isles toward the middle of the store.
