It has come to my attention that there are bears showing up in more and more populated areas of the country. I'm trying to decide where I'd like to relocate to, but there is no way I would comfortable anywhere that has the possibility of a BEAR walking down the street or showing up in my yard.
Please tell me where they are!
Urban bears are a way of life in Juneau. Even downtown. You gotta know how to be bear aware
I'd like to see all you sarcastic people here if a bear was on your deck or in your yard. You'd be cracking jokes left and right I'm sure.
The last time I was at my brother's house in NY, there was a bear in his yard. Cracking jokes is exactly what we did. Cracked open a few cold ones too. I mean, if you have a bear in your yard, why not enjoy it?
The only 'serious' thing he did was pull his and his neighbors trash bin into the garage.
Don't live in North Colorado Springs. During the summer, they walk around nightly in my neighborhood! You cannot keep your trash outside. You put it out in the morning right before pick up. And some Bears this year have gone into folks open garages and opening their extra fridges they keep in there to get food.
I love our wildlife but when you see a bear (or like this past year, a mountain lion) walking past your window, you start wondering how protective the glass would actually be if something happened.
here is one of our neighborly bears in E Central Minnesota, they come around occasionally to pull down bird feeders when we forget to bring them in and root around the compost bin...image is not so good as twilight was falling and was taken through a window...
...so far haven't been eaten by any of these bears
The fact that anyone here is ridiculing me for not wanting to live in an area that is known to have wandering BEARS in it, speaks volumes about the kind of people YOU are. I won't go any further with that. You can make of it what you will.

I won't be looking at this thread anymore, since I've gotten almost no useful info from it. I did not expect this kind of treatment.
Pretty much you will want to stay away from mountainous areas or areas near mountain ranges.
I was on a hike in the Adirondacks as a teen and was coming down a trail around a corner when I ran into a black bear about 5 feet away. I stopped out of shock and the bear also stopped (probably also out of shock). I said, "Oh, sh*t!" and right as I said it, the bear stood up, sniffing at the air. The bear grunted and then started to climb down the mountain using an alternate route so nothing happened other than some momentary surprise.
Bears can also be common in some rural locations.
Generally if you stick to the 'burbs or the city you don't really have to worry much about bears...unless you are living in places in Canada that get polar bears coming into town or places in Alaska that get bears roaming around at will.

I don't know much about grizzlies as I've never lived in an area where I've run across them or had them in my yard like the black bears, but here's a distro map and info on them as well. Grizzly bears have a very limited distribution in the lower 48:
Sometimes bears do eat people. We had a young man killed by a bear he was trying to photograph a coupla years ago here in New Jersey. Bear snacked on the body before they found him.
