For example, I have a feeling NYC is overrated in its unfriendliness simply because so many people have lived there and said it's unfriendly.. I do think it's more unfriendly that average but not as bad as the collective masses may make you think it is.

NYC really isn't unfriendly, maybe businessmen who are rushing through FiDi or Midtown but New Yorkers tend to avoid those places (the overly crowded parts at least) when they don't have to be there.
For what it's worth, I drunkenly lost my wallet in the LES the other night at 4:30 in the morning, and some dude messaged me on facebook and returned it to me.
You know who is unfriendly. People from ***attle, ***cago, New Yawnk, Philee and Miami. But others in those states not so much so I cant say the state. They are nasty and unfriendly. They brag too much how their cities are amazing and look down on visitors.

How come more people are filling in the blanks?
Simply saying people from California are not unfriendly, is totally inaccurate. Sure there are some nice people, but like every city, state, town, etc...there are indeed bad apples.
I moved to the Bay Area about 2 years ago, and it still surprises me how unfriendly & smug people are in the area.
It looks like I need to bump my own OP because people haven't read it.

The reason these kinds of threads are so completely ridiculous is because EVERY city/county/state has somebody lodging such complaints. To wit:

Since it is extremely unlikely that the people in EVERY city/county/state are unfriendly, clearly something else is going on. And what that something else is, is obviously a case of many people having unrealistic expectations of how people around them are supposed to behave. If you're expecting perfect strangers - even if they're your new neighbors - to go and greet you like you've been best buddies for years, then all I can say is, you have unrealistic expectations. Most people already have circles of friends and lives that are busy with other things, and you just can't expect them to suddenly go out and invite you to watch football games with them, or have a bake sale. Friends take time to develop. It's also possible that, if you find your neighbors unfriendly, maybe it's you, and not them.

Agreed. A lot of Californians even in big cities like LA and SF will greet and say hi to strangers, something I don't see as much of in urban areas on the East Coast.
