I was recently watching an episode of Jeopardy that had a section for U.S. State capital nicknames, I found it to be quite fascinating. Sadly, I can only remember one that talked about on the show, but it made me wonder what are some nicknames for some U.S. cities that aren't state capitals? Most big cities have nicknames:
New York City: Big Apple
Chicago: Windy City
Los Angeles: City of Angels
Detroit: Motor City
etc etc
But what are some other nicknames for cities? Indianapolis used to be referred to as Naptown in the early 1900's, supposedly because the city was so boring that the only thing worth doing was to take a nap downtown. Hartford is known as the Insurance Capital of the World. Even small cities have nicknames that may only be known at a state or local level.
From my time spend in Mississippi I learned that Jackson, the state capital, is known as the King City, and Meridian is known as the Queen City.
Please share nicknames of towns and cities you know of, they can even be alternative nicknames for the big ones, I'm sure the big 3 have many other nicknames.
Hotlanta was big in the 1990s for Atlanta. A lot of people refer to it as ATL though.
Funny you should say that, I had a job offer in Atlanta and several of my coworkers that I talked with it about kept calling it "Hotlanta". Not sure if it's called that because Atlanta is in the south and hot, if the city is hot for growth and expansion, or if the women there are all around known as "hot", but that is a common nickname I've encountered.
With its shootings and violent crime Chicago is called -- controversially -- Chiraq.
And during a particularly arctic winter there some years back, my relatives began calling it Chiberia.
Back during the 70s, NYC's moniker was Fun City, after a particularly inept comment about how great the place was during a crime wave under then mayor John Lindsay.
And who can forget Jesse Jackson's foot-in-mouth description of DC as Chocolate City?
Portland OR, I know is called Stumptown, though I don't know the reason.
