My mom is contemplating a move somewhere but she doesn't know where to go. She wants to live in a mid-sized city (not too big but not too small) that is growing but not growing too fast. It has to be fairly safe, clean, attractive, and have somewhat affordable housing or apartments available.
What is your opinion on the best mid-sized city in the US? Please explain.
Metro of about 550,000. Growing fast - but not too fast. Extremely clean. Healthy Economy. A very nice downtown that is growing -- Downtown also has an awesome Farmer's Market. Good shopping. A lot of new apartments, townhomes, condos. Extremely safe. Extremely affordable compared to everywhere else. Nice people.
Ok for one Kansas City is a large city, isnt it? Metro over 2 million.
Omaha would be good 830000 metro that has a phenomenal economy (we are one of 20 cities with 5 or more fortune 500 companies) we is growing fast but not to fast. We have one of the best zoos in the country and our downtown is also growing with several new condo towers going up and its very affordable, we have very nice people too and have good school districts in the suburbs or the western area and the eastern area is getting better. Omaha is one of the best cities for families and (if she needs it) we have very nice retirement homes
Hi there, When I say mid-sized, I envision a city with a population (metro wise) less than 1 Million. That's basically about it.
Ok cool. So what about a place with a metro of about 200,000? Frederick, MD is a charming town with lots of little shops and restaurants with some nice areas of parks and mountains. The place is detinantly growing too. Its a clean place, safe in most areas, peaceful, very attractive, and very family friendly. Lots of historical things too and very European looking downtown with tree lined streets and we even have our own pathetic baseball team! haha its a nice place that people from the DC area move to because its much cheaper. If you get bored, theres endless amounts of daytrips from here - gettysburg, anteitem, DC, Bmore, Philly, Shanandoha np, and lots of other places. I used to live there and loved it to death. Wish i could move back. But Maybe this is just a small city or a large town to you but i think its a great place

Hi there, sounds a bit small but I can take a look at that for my mom. She is originally from the East Coast so maybe this would be a fit for her. We're from Anchorage, AK with a pop of 360,000 so Frederick, MD is in that ballpark field population wise.
Columbia, MO is a nice, affordable, college town. According to Wiki, though, the Metro is about 162k. But if you did want to travel (like on Vacation) into a larger city Kansas City and St. Louis are about 2 hours away. Lake of the Ozarks is about an hour-and-a-half as well.
Just a suggestion, though. The Springfield, MO are is nice, too. It's about the same population (150k) and has a few colleges there. It's pretty affordable as well. But it's farther (about 3.5 hours to St. Louis) and to Kansas City (about 3 hours). It's about the same distance to Tulsa as well. And about 2 hours to Lake of the Ozarks.
She could also live in a suburb of St. Louis or Kansas City if she wants to be closer to a large city without living in one.
