Everyone is not a fan of warm weather. There are many that do not like the humidity of the South in the summer. Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Fargo, Grand Forks, Buffalo, are cold cities that come to mind.

Do some of you do research and find a favorable cold city to live in? Or, do you live in a cold city because that is where you are from? Is there any appeal to live in a cold city?

Duluth, MN is a pretty cold city even in the summer because of its proximity to Lake Superior. A lot of people like to live in cold weather cities because of proximity to winter sports. Duluth in particular has an abundance of that nearby, with a lot of backwoods skiing, ice fishing, snow showing, ice climbing, snowmobiling, etc. It's also in a very beautiful location and it has a pretty nice downtown area, and nice people. If I had to pick a really cold city to live in, I think I'd pick Duluth.

Looking for the coldest cities in the winter does not help you escape the heat/humidity in the summer. Places like Chicago, Boston and Buffalo can be pretty hot and humid in the summer. And places in the south that are hot/humid in the summer are typically comfortable and not nearly as humid in the winter.

If you want to avoid heat/humidity altogether look for temperate dry climates. The Bay Area, Denver, etc. The Bay Area has frequent fog/drizzle closer to the ocean, but just a few miles inland is a different world - Oakland has some of the most consistently comfortable weather I've experienced year-round. Denver still gets hot in the summer, but the humidity doesn't compare to the south or the northeast/Great Lakes cities. Winters are not as cold as you might expect if you're not familiar.

Best climate I've experienced year round? Mexico City. The weather there is perfect almost all the time and I HATE too hot/humid.

Billings MT. It can get steamy in the Summer, but it's a dry heat. 90 degrees doesn't feel bad there.

I don't mind winter weather but am not at all a fan of hot summers! (spent a summer living and working in DC and the heat and humidity were oppressive) Therefore, cities in the Upper Midwest and around the Great Lakes are my preferred cool-weather big cities.

The following list can be found on currentresults.com:

Coolest Weather
Large cities in America with a daily mean temperature for the year of less than 52 °F (11 °C)

City Daily Average
F °C
Minneapolis, Minnesota 46.3 7.9

Denver, Colorado 50.3 10.1
Detroit, Michigan 50.4 10.2

I loved living in Duluth and hated to leave. I really do find it to be one of the best summer cities in the US. What really sets it apart is the variety of thunderstorms and sunny days that keep the season interesting. It has the temperature mildness of Seattle with the weather variety of Denver. All of that with an immense lake, the outdoors, and a fantastic community.

I believe it is International Falls, MN that holds that title for contiguous US.
