Ok, I know there are 8,000,000 posts like this, but I am really hoping to get some helpful feedback. We live in California and had a place in Truckee for many years (before paying-for-college days) and we love Truckee so much. We love Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe. We love boating and hanging out by the lake in the summer, but we also love snow - skiing, snowshoeing, and seriously we even enjoy shoveling snow lol! But like many, we are fed up with California. We are moderate Republicans (fairly socially progressive but fiscally very conservative - we probably lean conservative.) We also admit to being yuppie-ish. In the ideal world, we'd like to live on a lake very much like Donner or Tahoe (ie. lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains) with a charming downtown, great restaurants, and a close-knit community. If there was a ski resort nearby, that would be an over the top bonus. We've thought about Incline Village NV, but are curious about possible places in Idaho, Montana, maybe Colorado? Does such a place exist outside the Hallmark channel?

Couer d'Alene comes to mind in Northern Idaho. Flathead Lake near Kalispell, Montana is another. (if you consider Western Montana actually part of the northwest). Klamath Lake near Klamath Falls, Oregon, in Southern Oregon. Lake Chelan is beautiful in North central Washington State, just north of Wenatchee.

Shoot that's a good point - Colorado isn't Northwest either! Lol. Thanks for the feedback. I love all of your recommendations.

I'd say Sandpoint Idaho might fit the bill for you. Its right on Idaho's largest lake (Lake Pend Oreille), and Schweitzer ski resort is right on the city's edge. For summer boating and winter skiing it doesn't get more convenient. Very cool town. Coeur d' Alene is similar, but a lot larger as it's part of the Spokane-CDA CSA which has about 730,000 people. You can find a great place on the lake in either spot. Hayden Lake right next to Coeur d' Alene has some nice spots too. You can get to multiple ski areas from Coeur d' Alene easily via I-90 (Silver Mountain/Lookout Pass). You'll get plenty of snow in either location as well.

If you love Lake Tahoe, but are fed up with California politics, why not go to the Nevada side of the Lake?

McCall, Idaho is another option, although the town is smaller than the others suggested in Idaho. It is on a beautiful glacial lake; Payette Lake, has snowcapped mountains, dense forests, there are a few ski resorts nearby, and the town is quaint and touristy with great restaurants.

Like I said, we have thought about Incline Village, or even Carson City, but is Nevada more moderate? I figured with Las Vegas it would not be.
