Hi, I am new to forum (and Utah with just passing the year mark) being a long time visitor and I was wondering if anyone who has been around the area for a while knows a lot about what these industrial companies are planning to do with these mountains? With the exception of Kennecott (because it's just plain awesome the way they did it) , I do not like seeing the mountains being dug out of. For example, I love the way the SL valley has on the south end, the traverse mountains that make it even more "surround by mountains". Well at Point of Mountain I noticed that on the literal point of it that they were just HAULING dirt and rocks of the mountain leaving an empty spot sort of. Same concept with just north west of SLC around the North Salt Lake are. Do you guys know the are I'm talking about?
So really I guess my questions are 1. What exactly are they getting out of the mountains? 2. Do they really have a plan of the future as to what it holds or are they just digging as they go? 3. When do they plan to stop?! There is not gonna be much of a point of they mountain if they keep going like this.
If anyone can answer these very specific questions, I would greatly appreciate it! I have been researching today and I have found hardly anything on this topic. So if any long time residents know, do please tell! Thanks!

You didn't want to get me started.....but since you did the Utah Copper/Kennecott/Rio Tinto organization has been singly responsible for more toxic waste and pollution of the Salt Lake Valley than any other single entity. Their image to me, is much like that of the politicians who put a great face forward, and raid the cookie jars when you're not looking. Others just want to praise them for their employment opportunities, and yet when they end up with cancer in their older age pay little attention to it's source. I for one wish they never came to Utah, and I'm sure I'm in the vast minority. In THIS world it's ALL about $$$ and they have plenty of that along with their greedy snatch and grab of land they've incorporated for well over a century. I for one HATE to gaze at the toxic waste they've coated the mountains with as you gaze to the West and see the denuded mountainsides along the Western Salt Lake Valley. The crud that blows out of there daily isn't something they would wish to discuss. Not to mention their little well kept secret toxic waste dump called DayBreak. I'm just waiting for the first cancer clusters to be discovered over there if I live long enough or stay here long enough. The main reason I placed triple tank water filtration systems in my home in Herriman along with the additional reverse osmosis for drinking. I trust them like I trust our government....not at all.

Sand and gravel. They are ancient Lake Bonneville beaches; that's where the main ingredient of cement comes from. The Wasatch Front cities were built with the stuff.

Hmmm...that's VERY interesting! thanks! So knowing that these are companies who "could careless", would you see them stopping before even more noticeably the mountain side is missing?

Nope, they will rape the mountainsides and insides until there is nothing worth $$$ to them left. They are already planning expansion in the Bingham area digging even deeper for molybdenum, as they are already reaping the benfits of higher gold prices, they mine a LOT of that. Copper is just a part of the deal. Just wish they'd replant on the east facing slopes so we wouldn't have to look at all the slag left over from 100 years of mining. Not to mention when the wind kicks up everything get coated on the west side with that junk from the mining.

I've never noticed any problems from mining; I notice all the car exhaust in the valley though.

Hilgi must be on vacation? I am with you Dcisive on the whole mess that is under Daybreak,,just saying I would not want to take that chance. I have been out Copperton way several times to that nice nursery/landscaping supply place-there is kind of a "layer" of funk that appears to be different than our usual dust storm debris.
I will say that the gravel pits around Knudsons Corner are full of houses now instead of just pits...

Knutson's corners is a old established area as well, and NOTHING like what was done by Kennecott. Kennecott used tons of arsenic and other very deadly chemicals to separate the ore from the rock, and this has been for over a century. When one buys a home in Daybreak the paperwork includes disclaimers regarding "some" of the aspects of limitations on growing things and expectations that go with that considering the toxins that lay below in their soil. I also don't trust water filtration systems used by the water district. Fluoride is a known toxin regulated by the EPA, yet they insist on putting it in our water. It compromises the immune system. I filter it OUT of my drinking water and feel sorry for those indulging of it because they've been told it will keep their kids cavity free. BUNK. Knudtson's Corners was a gravel pit, not a mine, so that's a LOT better indeed. No noxious chemicals used. Oh well. If the public only knew the truth they'd be floored. Guess they'd rather stay with their heads stuck in the toxic sand.

So how is this kept such a secret if it is so provable?! Surely their are protesters? You would think if everyone knew it would stop?.....I can honestly say that this is up there with the pollution and the slight commercialism of Utah. That makes three things. I there isn't much I can say negative about Utah but this just pushed it.
