NYC, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Miami are the US’s most talked about cities, having the strongest digital visibility and the largest share of the online conversation. These effectively are the most popular American cities internationally:
1. When it comes to digital visibility, Washington DC is a distant 16th in the list of US cities. Put differently, 15 other US cities are mentioned more in social media and online news and are searched more by people in search engines.
That's a big ol' spoonful of BS and doubt many are falling for that. #16th in digital visibility, the nation's capital and one of the most important cities in the world in terms of news and diplomacy? I don't care what link you're providing, use some cognitive thought for crying out loud...

Why should anyone be more concerned with your opinion over a study? Do you even have an Associate’s Degree?
Exactly - and the more you dig into and find things like this (i.e. Chicago is also the name of a popular band, movie, and play, while Los Angeles and Miami are not), the more you realize it's not a good proxy for city recognition.
Meanwhile, Washington can mean so many things - the President, numerous streets named Washington, Washington State, etc. - that I imagine they had to be very strict and only include mentions when people said "DC" or "Washington DC". A lot of people just call Washington DC "Washington", but I bet those didn't count.
Very dumb argument. By that logic, what if people searched “LA” instead Los Angeles? Or “NYC” instead of New York City? Or even New York instead of New York City. Point is, you’re reaching mightily. You really think this study is so elementary and rudimentary as to not incorporate “Washington” into its search database just because it left off “DC”? Wow. This study must have really bothered you so much to be so against it. Simply because it paints your city in a negative light. People are truly so sensitive on this site. What the heck is matter with y’all?

I'm not a Washington booster - I just think it's a fundamentally flawed study and that it doesn't serve as a very good proxy for international recognition. I work with a lot of big data and these types of challenges are very difficult to sort out.
Also, an honest question - does this data for most discussed US cities include data from people in the US? If so, that completely changes the context, especially since the US has by far the most social media users proportionally. Or did they extract all international users not based in the US for that list?
Boston ranks ahead of both of them for talked about cities.
It also ranks higher in its "global city rating" than DC.
Youre gonna have to try again before this gets ugly.
Why do you keep saying "and possibly Boston" when it clearly out ranks both cities in the study you posted?
This is silly... Twitter/internet mentions? Boston doesn't have as many nicknames as DC or SF so that totally invalidates your point. DC/DMV/WashingtonDC/District of Columbia/Washington/Nations Capital/ The White House, among a ton of others names are used to "mention" Washington. SF/Bay Area/The Bay or Oakland/ Silicon Valley may be mentioned to describe their region. Everyone in the world calls Boston the same thing Boston. What a lousy metric to use for validation.

While I agree that a discussion of American politics doesn’t always involve the city of Washington...this is a weird flex.
Agreed - I have a Masters in Geography for what that's worth, but that doesn't affect the legitimate critiques of this study.
Also worth noting that this was study was developed by a Dutch bank/government consultant and is essentially being used as marketing materials to promote their services related to city place branding. That doesn't necessarily invalidate it, but let's not act like this came out of some prestigious university and/or was heavily peer reviewed.

Now this is a good metric to see places side by side, but we have to be honest. When three of those places in the top ten are literal vacation only destinations, and not much relevant or related to tourist going into the central city for much of anything like Orlando. I lived in Orlando, and have traveled to foreign places where they only knew "Disney World" not Orlando. Even much of the Vegas strip is in Paradise, NV. Those places aren't more known worldwide than Chicago or Washington DC. Honolulu is not as popular as any of the other cities in the top 10 as most Americans have not even been there. The name Hawaii is more popular abroad, but Honolulu metro airport gains the flight stats.
Essentially the top 5 major metros to international visitors in which people presumably go into the actual city, and explore after getting off the plane looks to be NY, Miami, LA, SF, and DC. (With DC's numbers still being eaten into a bit due to close bus/train rides of people flying into NYC).
