I don't think they're a financially viable franchise long-term due to Baltimore's declining metro rank and again, the fact that most of the DC area doesn't associate with Baltimore or its sports teams.
Yes I agree with the lack of fans in the stadium, although there's additional reasons for the low turn out, but this is my point about Peter Angelos. He was smart enough to lock in the DC media market as part of his revenue stream. MASN media over takes both Baltimore and DC markets. He's making money of the fact that in order to watch local MLB games in Washington-Baltimore you have to turn on the MASN channel. There's actually two of them like MASN/MASN + or whatever it's called. I was pissed the other day when searching for the Nats vs Mets game here locally on the primary "MASN" channel. There was an Orioles game on, and I had to search for further the second channel. I believe the MASN+ only is available when both teams are playing at the same time. Point is this is some form of shared media in the DC-Baltimore region, you can't get MASN in California or Texas or Ohio.

Angelos is a garbage owner. Same as Snyder with the Skins. Two of the worst in ALL of sports. And this is coming from a NY sports fans who has to deal with lowlife, spoiled brat cokehead James Dolan. All 3 of these owners are top 5 worst IMO.

The Orioles WERE the local MLB team for DC area sports fans for generations. I know this because many of my family and friends from the DMV all grew up as O's fans when they were still good back in the day, a long time ago. But I do agree that with so much losing for the past 20+ years they are hardly relevant anymore beside being the Yanks and Sawx whipping boys. The Nats have helped accelerate the irrelevancy by winning the Series this past season but make no mistake about it, if the O's ever were to get good again a lot of their old time fans would hop right back on board. That whole region (DMV) really loved that franchise.

Columbus, GA and Auburn, AL should combine. Already a CSA of 600,000.

After seeing many of the responses, I have some more opinions.

I can see why people want San Jose with SF/Oakland (even though it is 1 hour away) but the Bay Area is though of as one region (plus the 49ers play near San Jose). I have friends in San Jose and I flew through SF to visit them (though SJ has an airport as well). They often associate themselves with the bay area. Plus the fact that Silicon Valley is usually associated with the Bay Area

As a DC resident, I think that DC and Baltimore should have their own separate metro areas (they are pretty different). DC radio stations might work in Baltimore, but Baltimore stations don't usually work in DC.

I can see why people want Riverside/SB with LA, but keep in mind that Riverside and SB counties stretch to the AZ/NV border. To do this would mean that the whole Palm Springs/Joshua Tree area (2+ hours from LA) and Mojave Desert areas. If SB and Riverside counties didn't go to the border, I would support this (though I actually haven't been to the area).

I don't really understand how the SF/Oak and SJ MSA's don't meed that commute threshold to combine. There is SO much traffic between the two. Ton of people commute down to Silicon Valley for jobs.

The CSA is 485K and change. It's not 600,000.

I think that multi-core metros with lots of job centers suffer from how the OMB calculates MSAs. With folks coming and going in multiple directions, I suppose that it's difficult to find a formula that works for such cases.

Actually we are both wrong. The 2018 CSA is 502k. Lagrange to the north isn’t included even though it touches the Columbus MSA. If they are added it would be close to 600k. Lagrange is very much connected to Columbus.
