I Live inside the Twin Cities beltway (though no one calls it a beltway).
Yes, living inside this road is more desirable for me and others who don't want to live in bland, bleak sprawlville. It's the densest, most interesting part of the metro. All of the major theaters, museums, and professional sports facilities are there.
No, I cannot hear this road from my house. It's over 3 miles away.
I lived inside 494/694 when I lived in the Twin Cities. Most of my favorite neighborhoods are inside 494/694, but the worst neighborhoods, as far as crime and blight, are as well. The areas around Lake Minnetonka are outside 494/694 and are some of the wealthiest in the metro, so there are desirable areas outside it.
LA doesn't have a true beltway. The freeways are more of a grid, and all of the mountains and valleys, as well as the ocean, play a big role in the layout.
I live inside of the i270 (Missouri) and i255(Illinois) loop near St Louis. There is also an inner belt i170 going through mid to north county. It isn't circular.
For those who prefer suburban style new homes it's outside the loop. For those who prefer urbanized and older suburban style homes from the 60s it can be found inside i270.
I am closer to i44 i55 i64 and i70. I can hear the traffic on 44 sometimes.
Do you live inside a beltway (circular highway/freeway)? If so, can you hear the traffic noise from the beltway itself?
In your metro area, is it generally more desirable to live inside the beltway or outside of it?
Half-beltways also count (i.e. I-495 around Boston), since its impossible to have a full beltway around a coastal city.
I live inside the I-295 beltway of Jacksonville, FL. I can occasionally hear the highway noise even though it's about 1.6 miles away from me, especially during rush hours. I can even hear it when I'm inside the house.
Some cities have multiple beltways.
Houston has three, some say four.....three freeway beltways and one surface street beltway.
From the city center outward....
Interstate 610......known as ‘The Loop’
Beltway 8/Sam Houston Tollway
FM 1960/State Highway 6.......the ‘surface street beltway’.

State Highway 99/also known as The Grand Parkway
I lived in Houston years ago. Is that Grand Parkway done yet?
