COVID-19 has really walloped the commercial and office industry over the past year and a half, allowing already semi-weak downtowns, to largely turn into ghost towns for much of the day.

Some of these cities below had several vacant skyscrapers before the pandemic, but COVID-19 has caused several other prominent towers to empty out, also, and increased the commercial/office vacancy rate.

Detroit
St Louis *tallest skyscraper vacant
New Orleans
Memphis *tallest skyscraper vacant
Baltimore
Phoenix *tallest skyscraper soon to be vacant by Oct 1
Las Vegas
Birmingham, AL

NYC struggling with high vacancy rates due to COVID-19:

Chicago struggling as well, with high vacancy rates overall:

Any other notable cities with vacant skyscrapers looming that anyone knows of?

I’m fairly certain Birmingham doesn’t have any abandoned/vacant skyscrapers, you may have confused it with Birmingham, UK which does have a few abandoned skyscrapers

In the case of Memphis, not only is its tallest skyscraper vacant, so is its 5th tallest, the Sterick Building which has been vacant since the 1980s and was once the tallest building in the Southeast. It's such a graceful and beautiful building. Pic from wikipedia:

^This article says that Birmingham has several abandoned skyscrapers, unless they have been renovated and occupied recently.

Yeah, that is a beautiful building.

The issue with this building is not due to "lack of interest in redevelopment," but rather complications from ownership/leasing.

https://www.wreg.com/news/could-the-...ext-big-thing/

From the article, "“The big issue is that the land is owned by one family and the building is owned by a different company,” she said. “It was a 99-year land lease when the building was built in the late ’20s and that time is not up yet.”

By the mid 2020s when the lease is up, expect redevelopment plans to move forward.

Baltimore does not have any vacant skyscrapers, there’s just been a massive shift in leasing from DT to Harbor East

East St. Louis has a tiny skyscraper called the Spivey building that has been abandoned for decades. It is on a monument list so it looks like it will be preserved.

The Spivey building on streetview.

Interesting.

While they may not have 1 skyscraper completely vacant, I've read Baltimore on the whole has a big vacant building problem, in general--

Curious how old this article is

Empire Building: Bought by Ascent and has since been turned into a luxury hotel

Brown Marx Tower: Also Bought by Ascent, the only one left that is actually vacant, but is being upkeeped by Ascent until they decide what to convert the building into (likely slowed down because of Pandemic)

John A. Hand Building: New Headquarters for San Fransisco based Landing

Ramsay-McCormack: Demolished a few months back for a new development

Thomas Jefferson Building: Now an Apartment complex

City Federal Building: a condominium now

The World Trade Center in New Orleans was abandoned for a while but has been turned into a Four Seasons. The Plaza Tower is still empty unfortunately.
