Drivers License as proof of Citizenship.
I recently received a renewal notice for my Arizona Drivers License. It only comes every five years and there were several options that interested me. We live within 10 miles of the border so the option to be able to use my license to prove my citizenship caught my eye. I packed up the family and off we went to DMV.
It wasn’t nearly as easy as it sounded. My son ws born in Korea while I was in the Army there, he had plenty of proof, and my wife had her citizenship papers. I was born in Philadelphia in the 1940s. Finding proof became a struggle. They would only accept a certificate from the state census. It took me six trips before I finally pleased DMV.
It’s a good idea and should be adopted everywhere

Like most states, AZ are looking for proof for residency in the state of AZ and identity. So Not necessarily citizenship. A person here on a work visa can also get a drivers license. NJ accepts a birth certificate from any country.

Be sure of what your DL does. Is it a Real ID or Enhanced DL?

"Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act enacted the 9/11 Commission's recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses.” The Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards and prohibits certain federal agencies from accepting for official purposes licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards. These purposes are:

Accessing certain federal facilities
Boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft
Entering nuclear power plants"

"Q: Can I use my REAL ID card to cross the border into Canada and Mexico and for international travel?
No. REAL ID cards cannot be used for border crossings into Canada, Mexico or other international travel."

This is different from Enhanced DL which are issued by very few states.

"State-issued enhanced drivers licenses (EDLs) provide proof of identity and U.S. citizenship, are issued in a secure process, and include technology that makes travel easier. They provide travelers with a low-cost, convenient alternative for entering the United States from Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean through a land or sea port of entry, in addition to serving as a permit to drive."

Are you sure that you don't mean a REAL ID driver's license? You need to prove that you are a citizen or legal resident to get a REAL ID, but it doesn't get you back and forth to Mexico. You still need your passport or passport card to do that.

Arizona doesn't have enhanced driver's licenses according to several websites.

If nothing else it takes the task of determining citizenship off of the Police Officer. T?he idea that only American Citizens can drive commercially won't find any resistance from me. Let the employers pay American wages.

So you understand that you cannot cross the border with Real ID.

You can't use your license to prove your citizenship. Only a passport can prove that (or in some cases, a birth certificate/naturalization certification).

Are you sure you read correctly?

My mother, for example, is a Permanent Resident with a Green Card. She has a Virginia Driver's License but by no means is she a citizen. The two are different tracks.

My Georgia License had a notation that I was not an American citizen on it.

REAL ID -- which requires further documentation for acquisition -- will and can be used for proof of citizenship.

Look carefully on her license -- it might have some kind of indicator on it.
