I've never heard of Camden, ME until today. What's it got that makes it an enormous tourist destination?
Fills up in the summer to the point of gridlock with tourists, mostly from NY and MA, but from all over. Beautiful harbor and mountain vistas. Sailing.
Expensive to live year round and you get the frigid climate in the off season.
Nashville, Indiana. Absolutely beautiful little town in the fall. The downtown area feels much like a Colorado mountain town... but in Indiana of all places
I don't know if Saint Joseph(MI), is THAT much of a hidden gem. This city has for a VERY long time been known about, when it comes to those who vacation into southwest Michigan from the Chicago area.
Now if instead you were talking about less discussed small towns in southwest Michigan(i.e. Watervliet, Niles, Buchanan), you might be onto something. I wasn't expecting Watervliet and Niles and Buchanan to be as nice as they were, but all those 3 towns surprised me. I sometimes have wondered about Dowagiac myself, from all the times I had taken the Amtrak Michigan train through this town.
And don't laugh, but very surprisingly enough Benton Harbor(across the river from Saint Joseph) has started to get new investment and turn the corner, in recent years. It isn't as dumpy as it once was as a neighboring city to St. Joseph, and has started to get a lot of new businesses in it's downtown. Do NOT be afraid to cross the Saint Joseph River(did I get that river's name, correct?) next time you're in Saint Joseph(MI), and check out Benton Harbor's downtown. Mason Jar Cafe is an awesome brunch restaurant, and there's also a decent hybrid music instrument and CD/record store(annoyingly I always forget that store's name) just down the block, or only 1 block away.
Bartlesville, OK. It has Frank Lloyd Wright's only skyscraper that was built, the Price Tower. It may be the most unusual oil town in Oklahoma. It also has a great community center where the annual Mozart Festival is held that many towns would envy.
I have a friend that lives in Knoxville she makes it sound like heaven
