My brother and wife are coming in from Dublin. Would like to treat them for dinner on a teacher's salary, yet looking for some good quality eats. They were huge fans of "The Spotted Pig" last time they were in. Any hidden jewels lurking about downtown? Any area of downtown would be cool. Thanks in advance.

Brian

Wing Shoon on the corner of East Broadway, and Essex St.

Also there is the Coral Restaurant on Broadway and 158th

Then there is the Island Burger and Shakes on 9th Ave between 51st and 52nd.

It used to be a lot cheaper to eat in NYC. Even pizza joints are pretty expensive per slice, and most are not even run by an italian.

Oh and there is Kredens' in Ridgewood queens, it is on Fresh Pond rd between I think Palmetto and woodbine. They are a little bit more expensive, but it is a pretty authentic polish restaurant except I think it is russians who run it.

Cafe Asean (10th st between 6th ave and Greenwich ave) is a nice little place that serves delicious, supposedly authentic Southeast Asian food--definitely more interesting than those cookie-cutter Thai places that have sprung up everywhere.

Joe's Shanghai on Pell Street has great soup dumplings! All the meals come "Family style", meaning the portions are HUGE and meant to be shared. At the center of all the tables is a lazy susan, so you can spin it and get to every plate with no fuss or mess.

How about Sapori d'Ischia in Woodside, Queens. It's an Italian grocery store by day, fine Italian restaurant by night.

I had dinner there last year and it was one of my most enjoyable meals ever.

Anitca's Trattoria is a great little family owned italian restaurant in Ridgewood, so if you visit Kredens like one poster mentioned check out Anticas maybe for dessert. On same street (FreshPond Rd.)

Two other great places - one is Asian - large sized MEALS - can order 1 meal for 2 plus they give free wine while you wait - not your typical Chinese meal
Sweet Rose or Rose something UGH - I always find it by finding the large crowd of wine drinkers waiting for a table

Also large portions but truly gourmet and great ambiance - Northern Italian Restaurant
Il Melograno 51st St and 10th Avenue

I highly recommend this place, The have THE Best food. They have like a meatball soup thats good, you HAVE to try the classic appetizer "mici". Cool atmosphere, and if you are lucky they have music.

Casa Romana - Romanian food

Casa Romana - Queens/Sunnyside - Sunnyside, NY 11104 - Yelp
::: CASA ROMANA RESTAURANT :::

Also, I forgot the name of where I went, maybe someone else know one of the best Polish Restaurants in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Try some Polish Pirogies! They ARE Good!
