Maybe Kingston NY, Lebanon NH or Springfield MA. Liberal but not very liberal, at least overall. Probably very liberal neighborhoods / parts of town.
Never heard of them til 2 minutes ago but Finchburg / Leominister MA are liberal voting, decently close to Boston and natural areas. Anybody know them?

In terms of Kingston, there are also some other communities in that area such as New Paltz, Saugerties and Woodstock that may also work in terms of small towns. New Paltz is also is home to a state college, while Saugerties is an artsy type of community. You also have the Catskill Mountains to the west and Kingston is 90 miles north of NYC. So, there are major airports within the drive time. Kingston itself is a decently diverse city and schools appear to be solid, but check that out for yourself.
