How would you define your state as a formula based on other states?
For example,
Georgia = 50% Alabama and 50% North Carolina
Massachusetts = 50% New York, 25% Connecticut, 25% New Jersey
I'm thinking more about the cultural commonalities moreso than population sizes here, so a state like Oklahoma could be 50% Texas without having anywhere close to 50% of Texas' population.
For some tricky states, it could be fair to add in places outside the country. Florida might have some parts NY and Alabama, but also have some parts Cuba.
Mass has its own culture. No way its 50% NY, and 25% NJ. Maybe a little Conn though
Tennessee: 30% NC (TN is a creature of NC + used to have a similar moderate Southern Democratic/Republican tradition until 10-15 years ago), 25% MS (Delta culture), 15% KY (Middle TN/Appalachia), 15% AL (Middle TN, SEC Football), 10% GA (East TN), 5% MO (NW TN)
Connecticut: 45% NY (Economy, SW CT Culture, Infrastructure, Diversity), 30% MA (Gov't structure, Public Education, Culture), 15% RI (Maritime, Culture + Food), 5% NJ, 2.5% GA, 2.5% NC
New York: 30% New Jersey, 20% Connecticut, 20% Ohio, 20% Pennsylvania, 10% Massachusetts
I'd throw in 10% for Vermont in there and cut Ohio to 10%. If you're including Canadian provinces, drop the other 10% of Ohio and replace that with Ontario.

I'd actually replace half of that MD DNA Delaware, since most of the state isn't too unlike South Jersey (even Lewes and Cape May are only separated by a ferry). Add an additional 10% to NY, since that's by far the second state that comes to mind when people think of NJ.

I don't hear anything about "southern transplants/copperheads" coming up to CT to southernize its feel, compared to actual transplant heavy states. Maybe give those shares to Vermont and New Hampshire.

Ok, if you really want to get super detailed, New Jersey has a large area of unique rare land called Pine Barrens. Massachusetts has some too, although a much smaller amount. And obviously both states have long sandy coastlines, beaches and lighthouses. So New Jersey has at least some Massachusetts right off the bat, at least geographically.
Mass, would you say that the suburbs of New Jersey counties like Morris and Somerset remind you of the suburbs in Massachusetts or Connecticut?

Hmm... I think Morris and Somerset County suburbs (ie, Bedminster, Chester) look like MA/CT suburbs. I live in Somerset County now and I definitely draw many comparisons. I would say NJ is busier than MA with better transportation/more transportation. But overall, yes I agree! Even the northern Bergen/Passaic County suburbs like Ringwood/Mahwah feel suppper CT/MA like.
Some comparisons that could be made
Rahway/Linden NJ = Everett MA
Lyndhurst/North Arlington NJ = Watertown MA
Weehawken = East Boston MA
The Oranges+Maplewood NJ = Dorchester + Milton
Montclair = Wellesley
