Over on the Connecticut forum we had a lengthy discussion of tolls as the state was reconsidering them as a source of revenue. That did not happen.

I do hate to tell everyone but tolls or user fees on vehicles and/or highways are inevitable. Currently our country’s transportation system is paid for mostly by taxes on gasoline. With alternative fuel vehicles taking off, those tax revenues are going to disappear. Some new way of funding transportation will need to be found. That could be tolls or a mileage fee. It will be interesting to see what happens. Jay
the one state that needs tolls, doesn't.

I am not completely sure, but I don't think Vermont has toll roads. When I lived in New Jersey I visited Vermont many times, and don't remember a toll on I-91 and I-89. And I don't think any state needs toll roads.

Yeah VT doesn't have tolls either. Just VT and CT in the NE.

But, if a state has no car tax and is a big drive thru state, a state like CT could greatly benefit from tolls throughout the major throughways (i-95, i-84) near the state borders.

I'd gladly pay tolls in Connecticut if it meant they would reconstruct their highways to eliminate all those left lane exits and merges.

Not really. I'm from Pennsylvania and don't mind paying high tolls/high taxes if I can visibly experience the return on that investment. I love New Jersey and don't mind paying through the nose to navigate through it in exchange for noticeably smoother roads and superior transit infrastructure. Whenever we go to NYC we start by staying overnight with my father in Scranton. In the morning we then drive to NJ and take transit into NYC. It is always a generally low-stress and sometimes even enjoyable experience.

Well now you know how it feels when people in the rest of the Northeast call Pennsylvanians a bunch of dumb hicks.
