1. SUNNY - Absolute must have. Can be cold, but MUST have lots of sun and daylight
2. DIVERSE - Everyone living amongst each other--not highly segregated, but diverse on paper
3. PROGRESSIVE - Open minded, tolerant
4. KIND - Sincere friendliness. Community. I spook easily (I wet myself in Boston)
5. FOLIAGE - It can even be cactus (just can't do prairie with only grass as far as the eye can see)

Most of Colorado aren't "natives" anymore, I'm sure the same is true for metro Denver. What makes you say it isn't open minded?

16.6% Black, 6.6% Asian, 29% Hispanic, 1 in 5 residents are foreign-born. It's not New York or Houston, but it's also not Portland or Salt Lake City. It's typically a little cheaper than areas west of I-25, but the city lacks a downtown, and rail service is only available along the I-70 and I-225 corridors.
If nothing but white people move to a city, how is it supposed to become more diverse? Asking for a friend...

Fort Collins =/= Denver. I've actually lived in both. They aren't comparable.
Have to disagree. It's not very open-minded, beyond what the natives like and prefer, and not generally diverse.
You don't know what you're talking about. If by open-minded you mean the standard woke checklist Denver got them all, including democratic socialist city council member. If it's open-minded as in appreciation of foreign culture Denver is where you'll find many non-Asian seating parties at Dim Sum or Korean BBQ restaurants. In more diverse on paper places like Houston or New York most non-Asians only go to these places with their Asian friends or in-laws.
Cannot be in California. I live in Bay Area and love love love it with all of my heart. Having to leave is ripping my heart out. However, we an issue that makes staying in the state a complete impossibility.
Understood if you don't want to divulge what this issue is, but it would be helpful to know if there are any other cities/states/regions which would also be disqualified due to this issue.
Denver is the first place that popped into my mind. Not so much for diversity or friendliness, but for its sunshine. Some years ago, I was looking to move there, and all the real-estate agents kept repeating the same line: "We get more sunny days per year than Florida!" So, there you go.
As far as Boston goes . . . yeah, not a particularly friendly place.
There's actually a lot of places that check the sunny and progressive boxes. If you have family / ties to California I'd look at Eastern OR or WA. Otherwise the Southwest / Southern Rockies is checks boxes good.
The area where New Mexico is a better fit than Denver or big city TX is the community / friendliness. The pace is just slower here and people aren't as hardcore (for better and worse); that means people take time to chat. There are a lot of community events too, even in places with small populations. Smaller cities have more of a community feel since people just know each other more. Just make sure you can get a job in NM if you're working fit since the economy isn't as broad as other spots.
