my friend who stayed in Fort Collins, said that he would compare chattanooga with Fort Collins (mid sized town). can anyone throw any other city names to compare with. i am looking for overall standard of living, safety, outdoor activities, housing, schools, job market etc..
I only drove through, but it reminded me of other midsized cities I have been to like Spokane or Topeka, except that Chattanooga was hillier like Spokane more so than Topeka.
Chattanooga and Charleston WV are roughly the same size in population (metro wise). Both are small/medium sized cities that sit in a valley on a river, surrounded by mountains. As a matter of fact, both cities even have a main street with an old black iron clock that sits in front of old Woolworth storefronts! Almost to the point of being eerie when you see the two at street level. Physically speaking, the two are very very similar in appearance when you walk around them.
The differences between the two revolve around economy. Chattanooga is only a 2 hour drive from the very large Atlanta metro area, as well as the Nashville and Knoxville metro areas. They benefit from tons of "day and weekend" tourists from those areas, and as a result, tourist money has allowed them to develop their Aquarium/Riverfront area, and there's always a fair amount of activity downtown. Charleston on the other hand is at least 3.5 hours from larger markets, taking it out of the range of "day trips", so it generally doesn't really attract tourists on a regular basis except during special events or festivals. Hence, the downtown area is much slower paced, no tourists, etc. A "sleepier" version of Chattanooga, I suppose.
