Since you weren't a homeowner, you weren't really affected by "them". Grand Jct. only grew by about 30,000 people in ten years (1997-2007), so I don't think the problem is as dire as you say.
Why shouldn't people move to someplace they like if they want? I just don't get that the vast majority of us are supposed to live in some rat hole, and only vacation where it's nice, while a select few "get" to live there.
Now I would really like to see some examples of that! I remember reading an article once that said that like newcomers everywhere, they like to get involved in civic events and people get angry at them for wanting to be on the school board, the town council, etc>
I asked the same thing, but I have a feeling we're going to be waiting a long, long time.
No because you really don't see alot of Californians moving to Atlanta. We have tons of people moving in from all over but the biggest numbers come from New York, New Jersey, the entire MidWest, Florida and the rest of the South. Some from out West including California but their numbers are small compared to those other places.
I keep threatening to move OUT of California , I , like, so can't take the cost of living !!
But my hubby from PA reminds me , hey, I pay for the weather don't forget.
California is not like the rest of the country. I'd be a fish outta water. Literally. I grew up by the beach haha so you wont see me next door any time soon.

Personally, I hate the weather where I live on the coast in LA. I pray every day that I get into UC Davis or UC Santa Cruz or even Riverside. I love Encino and Calabsas and Hidden Hills because the summers are hot and winters colder than here at least. Davis quite often drops below freezing.

Let's not forget, too, that LA/SF people move to quieter, smaller sections of California and housing prices go up 300%. It's been happening to the Central Coast for years. Now local Central Coasters are having to move because they can't (or couldn't before housing prices started falling) afford renting/owning, and there aren't enough jobs ... unless someone starts another winery!
I think the migration of Californians out of state is lower now that no one is selling their house in the current market. The housing boom\bubble likely started in California but spread thru-out the nation, esp metro regions. The crash of the stock market was partly due to the housing bust. It was a display of capitalism both good & bad & many California's were sitting on homes worth triple what they are today. I have neighbors who "flipped" properties as a profession & made good $.
That's over for now.
But the positive consequence of Californians moving into Nevada\ Colorado\ New Mexico & Montana is that they are now "Blue" states w/ Democratic majorities. Arizona in 2012 & Idaho after that. Nearly all western states including Alaska allow marijuana use in some form or another after California legalized it nearly 20 yrs ago. Concerns about the environment go beyond local smoking ordinates but primarily focus on guaranteeing healthy air\ water\ food. Lifestyle innovation & tolerance is a California export big-time & has help promote racial harmony & gay rights. What we see in the movies\ TV is a glimpse of LA that focuses on the wealthy, young & eccentric [ie. Entourage\ Curb Your Enthusiasm]. A sliver of what reality is for some is but a mere fantasy for most of us.
It is too crowded in California & more will move out of state again some day. But the migration has spread money around the country which is either a plus or a detriment depending on one's point of view.

Agreed! I was lucky to find a house that's pretty inexpensive, but who can afford a 2 bedroom condo for $1200 a month? and this is in Atascadero!!
