Why do people "from the east coast" never want to specify where they are actually from ?
This has always bothered me. I live in Colorado and when people ask me where I am from I reply "Denver" or "Colorado", not "The Mountain West" or "Just east of the Rockies". Can anyone explain this?
You're meeting the wrong people then. I always tell people that I am from Connecticut or at least New England.
Even saying that you're from New England falls into this same category. If you ask a person from California where they are from they usually say California or LA something along those lines, not "The West" or "The Great Lakes Region"etc..

New England is not like saying "The West". New England is smaller than California anyways.
I go to school in Canada and when people ask where I am from I say "Boston", not "The states". I have never met anyone who would just say "the east coast". It is very strange although you seem a little too bothered by it.
My guess is when they said the specific place on the east coast they would be answered "where's that?", then they would have to specify "on the east coast", so they just cut out the middle step.

I think this hits it right on the head. I personally always like to know exactly where people are from (if it comes up), but often it's more of a casual, no-specifics-wanted kind of question.
people from the east coast think it sounds cool or is some kind of badge of honor to say "east coast." maybe it was back in the 70's or 80's but now when one hears east coast they think dirty, rude, animal behavior, over-populated, ect.
I meet people here in DC who say they are "from the West Coast."
