Ashland also fits the OP's desire for a place with milder winters, nearby lakes, woods, streams. It's similar to the Blue Ridge.

Check out Portland, Oregon. Although it's mostly built in the valley, you can see mountains surrounding Portland especially Mt. Hood, which is visible even though it's about 45 minutes away. There are many mountains of the Cascades and Coastal Range. Oregon's West Coast is a plus with stunning mountains and ocean views at sunset.

The guy who started the thread takes amazing pictures. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Couldn't agree with you more on your take on the mountains in Vermont and Colorado. I find the Rockies barren and lifeless compared to the Green Mountains.

My wife and I want to move somewhere in the BR Mountains as well, but all of the mountains of new England are great.

A bit more mild in the winter, lots of trees and lakes and streams.

What's your favorite mountainous area? Not trying to do a "best" thread; very subjective. Just curious and thinking I might get some ideas from other people.

Barren and lifeless?!?
Time to break out the pics from my last trip there.
There are very few drives as breathtaking as Trail Ridge Road. Yea it might get a little barren when you get to the top of Trail Ridge.... but that's because you are above the treeline... trees can't grow that high up.
But the rest of that area is tree covered and full of life.
