The golf coast from Tallahassee to the northern shore of Lake Ponchatrain as "West Florida" kinda makes sense.

West Florida was actually an independent nation (albeit with no official recognition) for a short time.

The state of Jefferson might actually have happened if not for WW2.

On the other hand, Idaho was almost a "state that wasn't". In 1887, President Cleveland refused to sign a bill that would have split the Idaho Territory between the Washington and Nevada Territories.

Jefferson wanted to change the name from Louisiana to Jeffersononia after the Louisiana Purchase. West Florida extended all the way to Baton Rouge. These parishes are known as the Florida Parishes today and I-12 is the West Florida Republic Frwy. The Bonnie Blue flag is still flown throughout the Louisiana portion of West Florida.

BTW, present-day Louisiana was the Orleans Territory before the Purchase and everything between that and Canada was Louisiana.
