Forbes magazine compiled a list of the American cities with the highest rates of obesity. I’m not talking about being overweight; these percentages indicate the number of people diagnosed with clinical obesity in the following areas:
34.0% - Memphis, Tenn
31.3% - Birmingham, Ala.
31.1% - San Antonio, Texas
30.8% - Riverside/San Bernardino, Calif.
30.4% - Detroit
29.8% - Jacksonville, Fla.
28.8% - Nashville, Tenn.
27.5% - Oklahoma City
26.9% - Kansas City, Mo.
26.7% - San Diego, Calif.
26.3% - Cincinnati, Ohio
26.0% - Indianapolis
25.8% - New Orleans
25.8% - Baltimore
25.8% - Virginia Beach, Va.
25.6% - Atlanta
HOT, HOT, HOT weather -- why go outside and die from heat stroke and/or skin cancer?
I believe this is the cause more than anything. Nationwide, most obesity occurs among the 54-74 age bracket and the brutal, never-ending heat and humidity is tough enough for a 20 something to handle , let alone an elderly person.
Combine that with all the meth they snort up North and there's your answer....next question.
Because southern cities are very suburban and you need to use a car in almost any southern city, unless u live in downtown or something.
Fried food is another reason.

Heat has nothing to do with this and heat doesn't keep us southerners trapped inside our homes. Summer is the most active time in south with lots of outdoor activities, festivals, events, and more.
* laughs at "hey yall" man, the people from the South are extreme when it comes to food. I never even thought of deep fried pickle, it has never cross my mind, they wouldn't even do this in the cartoons.

It's not that extreme; you have fried snickers and fried ice cream, but fried pickles is crazy??
I bet if this was going on in the north; people wouldn't be acting like this.

That's just an excuse for northerners.
It keeps this Southerner inside his home at times. Now I'm 43 and it gets downright miserable here in North/Central FL to the tune of 95 degrees, (feels like 105 with the heat index), probably about the same in Texas.
In my teens and 20's I could do roofing or pour concrete in it all day, don't think I could do it now. If I go outside to work in the yard it's before 11AM or after 6pm these days, it's hot out there.
The report also found a relationship between poverty and obesity levels. Seven of the 10 states with the highest obesity rates are also in the top 10 for highest poverty rates.
A new CDC study shows that nearly 36% of black Americans are obese, much more than other major racial or ethnic groups. About 29% of Hispanics and 24% of whites are obese.
The new report is the first to look at the gap on a state-by-state level, finding blacks had much higher obesity rates in 17 states, and had rates about as high or higher than other groups in an additional two dozen more states. Health officials believe there are several reasons for the differences. People with lower incomes often have less access to medical care, exercise facilities and more expensive, healthier food. In many places, minorities are disproportionately poor. Attitudes about weight are also considered a factor.
