Tough call...I find so many of them to be beautiful.
I do have to say that one of the most pleasant surprises I've had to date was driving across Kentucky on the Bluegrass Parkway...that state is breathtaking, as is middle and eastern Tennessee.
Of all the southern states, however, you'll probably find the most topographical variety in NC and GA. It's hard to believe that you're in the same state when you've stood on NC's Mount Mitchell and the dunes of the Outer Banks, or driven the Richard Russell Parkway and rowed the tidal rivers of GA's coast.
I think NC probably has the most natural beauty since it has the combination of the highest mountains on East Coast, the delicate ecosystem of the Outer Banks/Sounds, rolling hills of the Piedmont & the Sandhills, the serene farmland of Coastal Plain and barrier islands of its Southern coast.
They're all beautiful in their own way, and can definately claim the lion's share of natural beauty in the U.S.
I think Tennessee might be the winner here, especially East Tennessee, with the beautiful cities of Knoxville and Chattanooga shrouded in the blue mist of the Great Smoky Mountains. It's a landscape which almost appears divine.
I have never been to the South except Florida [but many do not consider Florida to be a "true" Southern state]. Florida is quite beautiful, though. I think any Southern state than includes the Appalachian mountains is a real contender in the most beautiful category. The Great Smokey Mts looks incredible in photos. Perhaps Georgia or the 2 Carolina states may be the most beautiful in the South.
Arkansas and east Tennessee......Tennessee has the smokey mountains, and Arkansas has its Appalachian-esq mountains with its hidden caves and springs....both are something to look at when it rains..
