I see them occasional around northern Bergen County, Western Essex County, but they're mainly around NW and Southern NJ.

I saw one deer in Hackensack (where I lived before living here)
It was a strange sighting. It was in someones yard, but I don't know where it could of came from since there's no thick woods nearby.
The only possible area where i could imagine it come from was the side woods of the railroad since it runs parallel with Central (where I saw the deer).

Here's where I saw it if you're interested
hackensack - Google Maps

It takes 60 miles for a deer sighting?!
Maybe it's the lack of woodsy brooks/streams/ponds on LI because usually that's where deer concentrate themselves (I may be wrong). I'd say 20 miles outside of NYC into Jersey you'd be able to spot a few deer (if you were on the look out)
Does LI have any bears or foxes?

Grackle
Woodpeckers
Robin
Crow
Hawks (Red tail is common)
Bald Eagle
Vultures (Turkey and Black mostly)
Owls
...and of course, Sea Gulls
Yours too.

Quick Q
Have you been to DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst? You hear a lot of crap about the meadowlands, but I took a trip inside the park and was awed by all the birds I saw. vivid blue birds, goldfinches, warblers, swans, herons/egrets etc.

Never once saw a deer, fox, or bear on the island. Maybe it's just because were an island and they're a lot less populated with wildlife, I dont know. There really aren't any woods around here. Like i had mentioned, you have to go about 60 miles outside the city to get real nature and wildlife.

The only time I've ever seen a deer on Long island was when I was at Robert moses beach, lol. That's a totally separate island about 40 miles outside the city that has woods and stuff, outside of the beach.

Deer, coyotes, foxes, turkeys, groundhogs, squirrels, chipmunks

a few years back a bear was roaming through the suburbs. A wild turkey lived in a densely populated area of Cambridge for years. Deer are everywhere once you get outside 128 (95). You can see moose if you drive bout an hour and half north.

I live on the outskirts of Phoenix within walking access to open fields that lead straight into the desert. I've seen a greater variety of wildlife living here than any other place.

Coyotes
Racoons (this one surprised me, but I've seen them more than once)
Squirrels
Horny Toads
A rather large rainbow-colored reptile that we can't quite figure out
Rabbits
Geckos
Birds include Quail, Doves, Woodpeckers, Cactus Wren, Mockingbirds, Sparrows, Swallows, Grackles, Hawks, Owls, and even a Northern Harrier flew over one night. The Night Hawks come out at night. I've also seen Cardinals in the winter months. (I am a beginner bird-watcher).
Bats
Javelina
Some Cougars although they tend to stay in Scottsdale (that is a joke).

No, I haven't, but it sounds awesome! I'll be sure to visit sometime in the near future.

Another weird one - I don't know if they're still there, but I have read reports of green parrots that live in Edgewater, in their park that's right on the Hudson. I have yet to check it out myself, though.

Another one I want to check out is the Celery Farm in, I believe Waldwick or Wyckoff...I hear it's a good site for birds.

I see most wildlife when I hike in Harriman in NY or in Ringwood or the NJ's woods/parks. Last week I was on the Appalachian trail in Harriman, at the top of a small mountain, and I heard rustling - usually it's squirrels if it's short bursts of rustling, or deer if it's big rustles, but this was in between. I stopped, remained still, then saw off in the distance some bright orange - it was the tail of a fox (facing away from me, about 100 feet away). He was probably walking/running away from me but stopped. He then turned and we checked each other out for a minute. What an amazingly beautiful animal!

It's hard to believe this was all within 30 miles or so of NY City.

Minneapolis has the largest deer population of any large metro in the US I read once

2 Deer Wander Into Downtown Minneapolis - wcco.com (http://wcco.com/local/deer.downtown.minneapolis.2.1039334.html - broken link)

Skunks, badgers, gophers, mountain lions, timberwolves, bald eagles, black bears, moose are throughout the state of Minnesota

I thought you'd be interested since you live in Bergen County.

Harriman is one of my favorite North Eastern state parks. I've been to the Bear Mountain section of the park (Is it part of Harriam?), but never came across a fox before- good find
This is probably inapropriate to say here but what the hell.. We went to see family in Shelton, CT and it was just one of those days where luck ran short, and me and my brother had all these comical issues getting lost in woods exploring the area only to find we were lost. As we thought the day couldn't get any worst as we huffed some extremely steep hill in the cold drizzly weather... We witnessed deer making babies right on the side of the road.
I'm laughing at this moment as I type
