Being from New Jersey, I'm used to Diners that are (for the most part)
Close enough to clean
GREAT food
said food is far more than just burgers
said food is also the same quality at 2 a.m. as 2 p.m.
breakfast is served all day
always open
usually owned by Greeks (which usually affects the name and some of the dishes served)
I was wondering how Diner's throughout the U.S. were and what other people's local Diner's are
Visit Detroit, Coney Island is usually a code word for some kind of diner these days, quality varies. Leo's is my favorite! EXCELLENT food, cheap, varied menu, usually owned by Greeks or founded by Greeks, depending on location, usually clean.
i am originally from NJ, and now am in NC. we really dont have diners here that i have seen. there is one recently opened by greeks from queens, and it is good. BUT not open on sundays and of course not open 24 hours. the only places to get breakfast all day is Cracker Barrel and Waffle House. there is a Blue Ribbon Diner, and i THINK it's a chain, but although it LOOKS like diner, i dont think its anything like NJ.
Jersey definitely has some of the best diners around. NYC, Long Island, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut have many of those of 24 hour type diners you mentioned. Quality varies, but I really miss those. Here in the Metrowest area of Boston, there aren't any I know of, but the diners I know of in Arlington MA are pretty good. Something you don't see often is good homefries. Lot's of places either make them too dry or just use hashbrowns instead. There was a diner in upstate NY that had the best homefries around, I haven't been there in over 15 years so I'm not sure if it's still around. I remember a few visits to the Roscoe Diner in NY too, I always make a stop there when driving that way.
New Hampshire and Maine have some of the best diners in the country. Many of them bake their own bread, muffins, biscuits, and use farm fresh eggs and real maple syrup. Thick bacon slices, and big portions.
While I was in California they had some decent diners, one of which was Margie's Diner in San Luis Obispo. Great food and lot's of it, I don't think I was ever able to finish all the food on my plate. Great milkshakes too. Looked like a 50's style diner.
My favorite diners are in South Jersey, especially Ponzios (not sure if they are still open). I also like the Melrose in South Philly; Aramingo in Philly. Philly Diner in Essington, PA is usually good; Baltimore's Broadway Diner; and in Delaware we have very few: Crossroads is good, Arners can be iffy, Golden Dove, not so much.
