I've read that Denver is the backup capitol for the US if Washington DC was destroyed like if there was a nuclear explosion for example. It is isolated and safe from attack and is close to NORAD air defenses.
I think Dallas-Fort Worth would be a good capital, a very importatn city in a very important state, plus better conservative influences.
nah Houston is more important, and located in that same State.
And Houston used to be a capital of a Country itself. It already has the bad DC traffic so that is another plus
Right now it seems far fetched, BUT if our country continues having large population growth it is possible at some point that a new capitol could be built to reduce the strain on East Coast infrastructure. Several countries have built new capitol cities from scratch - Brazil, Pakistan, and Nigeria included
Also Myanmar (Burma) and Russia during the reign of Peter the Great (capital not moved back to Moscow until after the Revolution).

There are also lots of huge data centers in the Dallas area. It is an important Internet hub.
As the focus of the world shifts towards Asia, how about Fresno Located on the West Coast, i.e. as close to Asia as it gets on the mainland, yet located safely within the San Joaquin Valley. Lots of agricultural land around it, so food independence. Halfway between LA and SF.
Keep it centralized, like most state capitols. My vote was Cairo, IL.
Massachusetts, Rhode Island, , Michigan, Florida, Georgia, Louisinana, Minnesota, Washington, Oregon,Pennsyvainia, Nebraska, Kansas, Utah, Wyoming, and Alaska all have non-centralized capitals assuming you mean Geographicly.

That might cause some confusion with foreign politicians, when they book flights to attend a summit in Cairo
