My family is relocating by August 1, 2010 and have been seriously evaluating Georgia. By all surveys etc.. they state Georgia is where we need to go. Important factors to me are #1 Crime Rate #2 Schools #3 Hurricanes #4 Distance to Beach within app. 2-2.5 hours #5 Jobs in the Medical field and Property/Hospitality Management. We are going to be renting at first until we settle in for good hoping to find a 3+ bedroom house with a yard to rent at around $900 monthly. We are moving in from a country town in Wisconsin population of 800 and have lived in towns up to 25,000. The latter is our preference. If someone can direct me to places that may be within our needs and possibly resources for relocating that would be great. I would be willing to compromise on distance to ocean by up to 4.5 hours if the schools and community , job opportunities were right.

Forgot to add we are a caucasian family who are not prejedice but do not want to live in a community that we would be a minority either as that would culture shock my children.

Today is June14, 2010 and you say you will be relocating by Aug 1, 2010 and your research indicates GA is a potential destination.

You have lived in rural WI in towns of 800-25,000 and would like online posters to find a spot in the state of GA for you and your family.

My only suggestion is locate employment somewhere in the state of GA and move there. This might not be easy with unemployment at 9.8% but I wouldn't think of moving a family without knowing how I could provide for them.

Default Georgia Move

We are for certain moving to Georgia. We are just not certain where in Georgia would best suit us based on our priority list. We do have savings and the unemployment rate of 9.8 is pie compared to our county rate of 28.6% right now. All of our plants, stores, and restaurants have closed. Even most gas stations in a 50-60 mile each way radius. With a triple major BA degree 15+ years of management and my husband having just finished his degree in Bio Medical Informatics with 15+ years of management experience I am more concerned with my other criteria. And yes I am looking for people on the ground in Georgia to help me center in on an area so when I come down in 2 weeks I do not have to drive the entire state having no idea where is safe or has good schools, living.

Well, let's bear in mind that jobs in "Bio Medical Informatics" aren't exactly commonplace, so you're likely going to have to be within commuting distance of Atlanta to find a job in that field. That just narrowed your search down dramatically.

I live in Atlanta--the metro area now has a population of over 5,000,000 however if you can adapt to suburban living it might be an option for your family.

-Crime, yes, Atlanta has it and some areas have more than others
//www.city-data.com/forum/atlan...what-have.html

-Schools--GA ranks near the bottom of many national lists. Extensive budget cuts have eliminated teaching jobs, increased classroom size and reduced school programs.

--Hurricanes---not an issue near Atlanta. GA coast rarely experiences hurricanes.

--2.5 hours from Atlanta to GA Coast/Savannah. I would almost venture to say that from anywhere in GA you could travel to the coast in 3-4 hours--but I'm not certain.

--The job market is competitive in all fields.

I compiled all the FYI about locating employment in the Atlanta area in this thread>>>

I honestly do not know how to compare GA to WI.

GA has a 'moderate' climate, perhaps 2 months during the year in which you need coats, jackets, hats and gloves. There is enough humidity during the summer, primarily July and August, to make everyone uncomfortable. Living in South GA during the summer is often 'miserable'.

good luck

Try the Oconee County area. Might meet your wants. Close to medical facilities in Athens and Oconee County.

Coming from Wisconsin to Georgia will be culture shock enough in itself! Tabitha, she was just stating the situation, no need to be so rude! Most northern states are not as diversified as we are in the south. That is just how those states are...She did not make them that way, so take your attitude somewhere else please.

I agree with Kovacs... The Atlanta area would probably be your best bet. I guess you are probably already here, but I would suggest the area of Cumming/Johns Creek area. There are good schools there, the types of neighborhoods you are looking for and is close enough to Atlanta, but just far enough away too.

Good luck!

I am considering a job in Savannah, and my husband is throwing a fit about the "high crime rate." Here are some statistics from "The 2010 City Crime Rate Rankings" using data from the FBI report, "Crime in the United States 2009". First place goes to St. Louis at #1 with a score of 381 and Detroit at #3 at 374 (100 is the national average, higher number is higher crime, number below 100 are below the national average). Savannah is #104 on the list with a score of 72.95---that's significantly below the national average. Cities with higher crime rates than Savannah include Cincinnati, score 182; Indiananapolis, score 154; St. Petersburg FL, score 148; Houston - 133; Columbia SC, 110; South Bend IN 107; Richmond VA, 93; Greensboro NC - 82; Winston-Salem NC - 77.
