If your girlfriend's daughter is school age (or going to be), then definitely heed the advice not to live in Athens. There is a reason there are several private schools with waiting lists in the area. If you really want to live near Athens (after all it is a pretty fun little town) then choose Oconee county, which is right next door. I have also heard really good things about the schools in Jefferson. Georgia already ranks fairly low on the national scale for education. I'm sure you don't want to magnify that by sending your child into a school system that is at the bottom of the bottom pile.

What about the Winder / Barrow area? Others may want to weigh in ...

ADVICE: Georgia has VERY small counties, and the county you live in is often more important than the city or town. Example: Several people have suggested Braselton which is unusual because it is in FOUR DIFFERENT COUNTIES! One side of town is in the Atlanta metro area; the other in the Gainesville metro area. And depending on what "quadrant" of the city you live, your GF's daughter will be assigned to one of four different county school districts!

Confused enough yet?

Excellent point on the area around Braselton. I'd opt for Jefferson myself. Their schools are pretty decent.

any pointers on places to live within jefferson or anywhere for that matter? I have bad credit right now and don't really know what websites to find a place on. All I know about when I am coming down there is September. I do not know a date yet so it is making this a little hard but we would like to know where we are moving before we begin the 2000 mile drive/move from Utah to Georgia.

I'm guessing your best bet is to locate a realtor in Jefferson and ask about rental properties. I know many rental agents do credit checks, and for good reasons, to screen out people. You might get lucky though. I'd still go with the Jefferson area over Athens given where you will be working.

Athens is a great town with plenty to do (especially if you love eating) but there are bad, high crime areas. I grew up in Athens and i can say that Clarke County in general is not a great place to live with a family, namely because of the poor public schools. Oconee County is probably the best area to live in but it is a good drive from Pendergrass. Jefferson is a great place to live and it's schools boast a high reputation much like those of Oconee's.

Finding rentals in Jefferson area could prove difficult, we are not a big town. I wish you luck.
