I'm searching (mostly unknown to my husband...) for a place to live north of Atlanta. We're not a suburbs kind of family, we want the mountains and valleys, but, I'm worried about where my husband could work to support us. He is a Maintenance Technician with Unilever right now. So we would need to find work in that field. One that pays and has great insurance (Unilever is a tough company to beat in regards to that). If he were to find a job in Atlanta, or the suburb area, is there a commuting town south of the north Georgia mountains he could park and ride? Or a transit of some type.....not sure I trust him driving in a city I'm looking in the Dahlonega, Ga area. The small town feel with great food and art really appeal to me. Not to mention having what looks like a nice college, and schools. The wineries are also a plus. I'm a gardener and looking for a valley home with a little land, enough for kids, animals and a garden.
I'm so ready to leave where we live now. I was born in Jersey and raised in Virginia. Neither of which is anything like living where we do now in West Tennessee. It's not for everyone, but those that were raised here seem to love it....I hate racism and don't want my kids raised around it. We are Christians, however, I have friends and loved ones of all walks of life and embrace it. After all, God commands us to LOVE everyone right? Thanks for reading and really looking forward to responses!!

Dahlonega would be an excellent choice for the type of exurban/semi-rural small town lifestyle that you desire.

Though be forewarned that if you moved to the Atlanta area, your husband would more than likely have to drive to and from work because transit basically would not be an option unless your husband was working in an office job in Central Atlanta (Perimeter Center/Dunwoody, Buckhead, Midtown and Downtown Atlanta)...

...That's because the very limited transit options there are north of Atlanta are basically only geared completely towards people who commute down the Georgia Highway 400 between Forsyth County and Central Atlanta with park-and-ride GRTA Xpress commuter bus service between the North Metro Atlanta outer suburb of Cumming and the North Springs MARTA Station and/or Midtown MARTA Station (MARTA is Atlanta's limited but slowly improving subway/heavy rail and local service)...

...Your husband also would more than likely have to drive to and from work because most of the Atlanta region's manufacturing-type jobs and jobs at sprawling manufacturing-type facilities are spread throughout outlying areas that are mostly not convenient to transit service.

(...Manufacturing-type facilities in Metro Atlanta are located in outlying suburban business districts like:

> The I-75 Northwest Corridor in Cobb and Bartow counties...

> Along Fulton Industrial Boulevard in West and Southwest Fulton County...

> Around the Atlanta Airport area south through Clayton and Henry counties along the I-675 and I-75 South corridors...

> In Northwest Atlanta and Southeast Cobb County along the Marietta Boulevard, Atlanta Road and South Cobb Drive corridors...

> In the Northlake and Tucker areas in DeKalb County in near-East Metro Atlanta...

> Along the Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, I-85/I-985 Northeast and Georgia Highway 316 corridors in Gwinnett, Hall and Jackson counties in Northeast Metro Atlanta...

> Along the I-20 East Corridor through Rockdale and Newton counties in East Metro Atlanta.

In almost any case, Atlanta is a notoriously automobile-overdependent large major metro region with employment opportunities spread throughout a relatively very large geographical area that ranges from between 10-40 counties....Something which means that your husband should with few exceptions be prepared to drive to almost whatever employment opportunities may present themselves in the Atlanta region.

It looks like if we were to find a home at the base of a mountain near Dahlonega it would require at least an hour's commute to any given industrial area, is that right?

You might want to consider Canton, as well.

For the most part, but its not impossible to find something within a reasonable drive of a home near the mountains.

There aren't mountains in Canton. But they're not far away.

If you don't have your heart set on Georgia, I'd also point you to upstate South Carolina, which is home to quite a few manufacturing jobs [especially in the automotive sector] that are within easy reach of mountains.

It doesn't really matter how close the nearest industrial area is to the Dahlonega area.

What matters is that in this job market where people are lucky just to have ANY jobs come their way, you and your family should be prepared for your husband to have to commute to where ever the nearest high-quality, well-paying job opportunity should present itself, no matter whether it is only 20 miles away or over 100 miles away.
