Having lived in Franklin County right near the Madison County line, I wouldn't recommend Danielsville. Meth use is rather conspicuous.

I know a number of people who decided on Jefferson. One friend moved from Watkinsville to Jefferson and although she likes the home she could afford there, the grocery shopping and such is very limited (according to her).

So I was mostly just curious about the outskirts, sorry should have specified in my original post.. Winder? Jefferson? Braselton? Just to name a few I've seen on the map.. We don't mind a little drive, as my husband will work in those areas as well from time to time. Just wondering if those areas are worth looking into or if anyone has thoughts of neighborhoods in those areas or similar?
**We will only be in the Athens area for a year or two, also. Nothing permanent.

Again, thanks so much for the feedback! We appreciate any recommendations!
If your husband will be working in Winder and Bethlehem, be sure look for someplace on the west side of Athens in the vicinity of Epps Bridge Parkway and GA 316. The apartment complexes along Epps Bridge Parkway are not devoid of college students, but they're far enough away from the University of Georgia campus that they're not overrun with them either. You're more likely to find young families renting there than you are in any apartment complex near campus or on the east side of town.

As for speed enforcement on GA 316 and U.S. 129, just make sure to stay under 70 MPH in the 55 MPH zones, and under 80 MPH in the 65 MPH zones. The cops will leave you alone that way. I've gotten my fair share of speeding tickets before, but I've literally never been pulled over for less than 15 MPH over the speed limit in Georgia.

Don't believe all this garbage about Clarke county schools, Oconee schools just have more white middle class kids, so the test scores are higher. Its the same state curriculum. Clarke sends seniors off to great colleges every year. This year students went off to Harvard, Columbia, U of Chicago, etc... If you can't handle being around diversity then Clarke is not for you. If you only want to be around white, Christian conservatives then Oconee is your best bet. That is the reality. People and their prejudices and ignorance just perpetuate this myth that the schools are unacceptable.
