Columbus is 20 miles closure to downtown Atlanta. It's only 80 miles or so to Hartsfield. It's 130 miles from Chattanooga.

According to Google Earth, downtown Atlanta to downtown Chattanooga is exactly 118 miles
Downtown Atlanta to downtown Columbus, GA is exactly 107 miles.. very slight difference.. certainly not the 50 miles you were suggesting.
But the point beingf neither one of these cities will be the next suburb of Atlanta.... a 50 mile radius is pretty much the limit.

But even in the maga sprawl that is LA.. about as far as the hinter suburbs reach is roughly 56 miles from the city center to either San Bernadino or San Juan Capistrano.. so suggesting that Atlanta will eventually engulf cities more than 100 miles from its city center is a bit far fetched to say the least.

Chattanooga is closer to where most of the higher paying professional JObs in metro Atlanta are located.. which is the northside..

I agree with Disgusta. Atlanta will go up before going out which is a good thing. Compared to some of the other metros in the top 10 it isn't as dense so that's what they need to work on. More projects like Atlantic Station are needed.

None.

Rising oil prices should prompt more efficient city planning that is not centered around automobiles. Hopefully not too much more sprawl will occur in the large scale manner it has since the 90's -- else the city risks water crisis as well as land devastation.

Newnan is already part of Metro Atlanta...so you're right about that. As you can see, Coweta County (Newnan) is easily included in Metro Atlanta.

Honestly, I'm a little surprised Metro Atlanta is including counties such as Meriwether, Pike & Lamar. These counties are largely still rural. I've always associated Meriwether county with nearby Pine Mountain & LaGrange (both in neighboring Troup County) which are both associated with Columbus. Hm... Guess the MSA guys got a bit carried away?
