We met some people who cruised in to Cumberland Island not St. Mary's. That might be an option for you. You can make reservations at The Greyfield for dinner or lunch only. The people we met started in the DC area and planned to cruise down the Intercoastal to the keys.

There is actually a colony of cruisers that dock at the St Simons Marina after traveling down the Intercoastal from up north (most I've met seem to hail from the Chesapeake Bay/Bal-Wash area). They are a party-hearty crowd and seem to have a great time doing it. Apparently there is a lot to see along this route. Some of them move on to FL for the coldest part of the winter, some stay.
