Would love to see this thread revived. We are thinking very strongly about moving to the N Georgia mountain area, and are very interested in the feel it seems Dahlonega and surrounding areas seem to offer.

I love Dahlonega. It's probably my favorite North Georgia town. My niece went to school at UNG and got married there in the sweetest little wedding you've ever seen, on the front lawn of an old house, barefoot, looking out over the campus. My sister and her husband recently moved to Cleveland and bought the nicest house with great mountain views.

North Georgia isn't for everybody. It's a unique culture, and heavily influenced by tourism these days. But I love it and could see myself living there rather than the coast.

I've got a friend that goes to UNG in Dahlonega and I've been up there quite a bit. I love visiting there and the mountains in the area. You're central to everywhere. Easy access to 400 which can get you to the Outlet Mall in Dawsonville, Atlanta and Lake Lanier. Then of course to the north east and west you have the mountains. The town square is nice. Touristy and pedestrian friendly.

For those who live there, what is the cost of living like? I need to do some homework about taxes, whether they tax SS, what sort of programs are alive for the elderly, etc.......

But dang, a friend of mine just moved close to Dahlonega, and he loves it. He was moving closer to "home"... where he's from... so of course he's gonna love it, but he did say that Dahlonega was very expensive to live there.

bullie~

In looking at the costs of houses, I haven't seen that they are any worse in Dahlonega than anywhere else nearby. Would be surprised to know that the COL was worse there. There may be some touristy places that would hike their prices, though. Georgia as a state does not tax social security.

We lived there in 2014/2015 and I was warned before putting my kids in school there that it was a horrible place for kids with special needs. My son is childhood bipolar and the person that told me that was 100% correct. The school system DOES NOT know how to handle children with special needs. Long story short they got CPS involved because of their own incompetence and in turn got the cops involved and we had to hire a real lawyer not a court appointed one to defend us against the CPS gestapo. I pass through there once a month because we live 2 counties away now and wife goes there for OGBYN visits once a month since she is pregnant but I would NEVER live there again. Heavy handed cops, nosy people, horrible school system and CPS gestapo. Only other place that bad is Rabun County in far NE Ga. Wouldn't surprise me if Lumpkin county CPS is sued like Rabun County was.
