Why has the term "thug" become viewed as being racist? A thug as a I define it is someone who is boorish/classless/no manners. It can apply to anyone regardless of race. It has to do with behavior not race. Yet, when the term has been appropriately applied to certain individuals who happen to be Black, it has suddenly become "racist"? Why is that? In my opinion, Richie Incognito is as much of a thug as Ron Artest. I will apply the term to both individuals.

I apply the word "thug" to any tough guy that conducts himself outside the law. Michael Brown is perfect example of a thug when he strong armed that Asian store owner to steal the cigars.
Black, White, any colour or race it doesn't matter. A thug could be a red haired Irish guy that just left the rugby match and beats up on a unsuspecting guy wearing the opposing teams jersey.
Thug is not a racist word it is all in how it is perceived.

It's an Indian word. From one of their hundreds of languages. It mean someone who beats people. It got into the English language when The East India Company ruled India. It has nothing to do with race, like the "n-word" or similar epithets.

It's a Hindi word. Means "thief/scoundrel." (According to an Indian coworker.)

A lot of well known hip hop artists over the last few decades have had a big influence in associating the term "thug" to the African American community. If I had to make a guess I would say the mainstream influence of their music has played a big part with the term and race.

I see your point though, just my guessing.

Just because the word police say it's "racist" doesn't make it so.

The last time I used the word "thug," I was talking about Justin Bieber.

Because when you see a story about a celeb acting badly he either gets called a thug, if he is black, or he gets called a "bad boy", "misunderstood" or just by his name if he is white. Look at any comment section of any story about Chris Brown or Charlie Sheen or Justin Bieber or Richard Sherman (after his Superbowl rant) or anybody.

Thug by itself isn't a term that is racist. But some people can use it in a questionable context that can have racial undertones.

It is not a racist term to normal people, just the knee jerk liberals who want to be divisive. They are now programmed by political correctness to try and regulate speech and thought. In most cases they get more offended on behalf of others than the groups themselves.

The OP has it right in that the term is akin to leg breaker, someone with boorish behavior, etc.
As a matter of fact, more white people have been called thug in literature, movies, etc. than any minority group.
That does not stop the thought control PC police from trying to take terms like Oriental, thug, manhole, etc. and making them into something they are not.

I stopped paying attention to the things that offend black people sometime back in the late 90's, because quite frankly I neither care, nor can I keep up with what's P.C. and what's not with them. It seems to change as often as the weather. With that in mind, I have nothing against the African American community and wish them all the best in their endeavors.
