I think Booker T. Washington was on to something. And I respect W.E.B DuBois, but I don't think the push for integration should've been so hard. When blacks weren't allowed to use white establishments, they were forced to make their own. Now granted they were probably subpar, but it was THEIRS. Forcing themselves into diners and demanding food from white cooks that don't want you in there? Seems like a recipe for disaster. Anyway, the "work with white people over time" approach seems like there could've been more trust built between blacks and whites, rather than "equality" which left them in ghettos and projects. These places are more like traps than anything. Very hard to overcome those environments. Thoughts?

Those who used the system to their advantage have made GREAT strides. It's all about personal responsibility....

You can't overcome if you don't strive to improve yourself or your situation. The opportunities are there..but you have to WORK at it...no matter what your race or status, or whatever you deem to be important.

There is a much bigger black middle class than existed 60 years ago. Far higher rates of high school completion and college attainment.

The black poor in the inner cities are probably MORE segregated than they were 60 years ago. Not only by race, but also by class, but then I don't see why any will expect those who can achieve upward mobility to remain in areas with high poverty levels and the associated neglect.

I'm not talking about everyone's individual opportunities as a whole. I'm familiar with personal responsibility and it's been working out pretty well for me.

What I'm asking is a general question about black people. After integration, they seemed to lose the entrepreneurial spirit. So I'm wondering whether or not it did more harm than good for blacks.

There are only two approaches:
Integration... or Disintegration.

Guess which is better for individuals, families, and the U.S. as a whole.

I think the first picture enabled the second one over time.

When everything was segregated, blacks had to come up with their own means to survive. Nowadays, a large number depend on government assistance and do disruptive things rather than attempt to build businesses and improve their economic class.

Bunk. Holding people down was certainly not the right approach, nor did it cause things to turn out the way they are these days.

So please explain how integration has helped blacks going forward since the sixties.

Have you ever heard of the Tuskegee Machine?

You need to clarify your question. Did it help or hurt whom?

I don't think there can be any reasonable debate about the cumulative effect of integration upon whites, or America as a whole. It's been overwhelmingly negative.

Did it help or hurt black people? I understand why one would say it's been a negative occurrence for whites, but that's another debate. How about for blacks?
