How do you feel about the Govt admitting refugees, or even regular immigrants, who bring their multiple wives with them?
This has been happening and a reporter found that social workers were just filing the second wife as a "single mother".
There is no state that legally permits bigamy. What do we do when someone shows up on our doorstep and introduces their No.1 and No.2 wives?
If the U.S. doesn't recognize those marriages or all those women as legitimate wives does that "bigamy" actually exist? If the wives are given legal privileges, etc. then what does it matter?
I think it matters because it's challenging current laws and there are tons of issues around legal marriage. This is just another reason that people/countries need to be picky when it comes to immigration and the welcoming of everyone.
Since a man can only have one wife in the US, only that wife will have the legal benefits of being a married woman. The other woman/women will have no legal benefits other than as single individuals. Pretty simple.
I could careless if someone has multiple wives as long as it's consensual. The issues I see with these refuges will be that the wives and kids get a taste of woman's freedoms here and become westernized want to get away from the repressive ideology of the Muslim. This happened here with an Iraqi father ran over his daughter and killed her for dis-obeying. "We" don't do anything because I seriously doubt your scenario. If you want to be even half way believable, post a link.
The US doesn't recognize multiple wives. Hence, only 1 wife is going to be admitted to the US per husband. That first wife is the only one with legal status in the US. Any other woman, even if legally married to the man in another country, has to be admitted to the US on her own.
"Social workers" are only going to get involved if the family applies for welfare. "Regular" immigrants are generally sponsored by family members or organizations that assist them. I believe that refugees are also helped by organization and do not go directly on welfare. However, it's really moot because only 1 wife is recognized, so any "extras" have no legal standing as "wives" ... which is exactly how the law works in regard to Fundamentalist Mormons who marry multiple women: only the first wife gets legal status.

Ummm ... this isn't just a Muslim problem. It's been a problem between immigrant parents and their westernized children for generations. Do you think some stolid German Lutheran farmer in Nebraska would have been happy with his daughter taking up with some "Englischer" cowboy with a Texas drawl that she met while taking the eggs into town to sell to the storekeeper?
a human is a human, doesn't matter if it'sa man, or 1st or 2nd wife... If there's a merit to grant asylum, their sex life is not government business
Their sex life most certainly *is* the government's business. Polygamy is culturally destructive, and it's a big part of why the places these people come from are total hell-holes.
