I know from my experience all my pets were found abandoned or given to me by friends. As for veterinarians they are often rip off artists so I avoid them. If I cannot help my pet get well then the only other option is euthanization. People kept pets for thousands of years before medical care and they will after the current system fails. Poor or not a person should have the ability to have pets if they can care for them with food and shelter.
Both of my dogs have heart issues that require medication. Should I have just euthanized them when they had no other problems because "all vets are rip-off artists". Would you take your dog to the vet if it broke its leg? Developed a health condition that just needed some meds for awhile?
I'm a believer that SOME vets try to get people to give unnecessary vaccinations but I'm fortunate to have found one that not only doesn't pressure me into giving lots of vaccinations but will also work with me if need be financially. You can't lump all veterinarians in one group and say they are all bad.
as to me.. killing a pet with a gun ...I'm sorry, I just can't handle that at all. Maybe your aim wasn't quite what you thought...maybe it wasn't instant... no matter, if it wasn't without pain...its wrong.
The reason some people use a firearm is because death is instantaneous. The animal feels no pain.
Many healthy but unwanted dogs and cats are euthanized every year because nobody wants to adopt them. Many no kill shelters say they do not have room to save them because they have trouble finding homes for the ones they already have and yet they often charge expensive adoption fees that many cannot afford .
Animals offer unconditional love that studies have shown benefit people and make their lives better, and yet many will claim that those who are poor should not own a pet because they cannot afford to care for them properly. Does that mean the poor should do without a loving pet that may benefit their lives, and a dog or cat who would otherwise be euthanized that could have gone to a loving home would be better off dead rather then being owned by a poor person?
And where do you draw the line in deciding who is rich enough to own a pet? Medical technology for pets today can be very expensive. They now have mri and ct scans for pets, surgeries of all kinds and even cancer treatments. Modern medicine can do almost anything for a pet that they can do for a human. When a dog or cat has a health problem how much is an owner expected to be able to afford to pay for their medical care to be considered a good pet owner?
With so many unwanted animals in this world is it really fair to deny poor people the right to own a pet?
All they have to do is go to a local shelter. My first dog cost $50 and when I went to rescue the second one they were having a 4th of July special that week and I only had to pay $4 for him. Best money ever spent. The only other thing required is to get the rabies shot and tags. They are small so they don't eat much and they share some of my food too. the shelter does not ask how much money you make.

That sounds much more affordable, but has vet care for your pets been expensive since then? Does anyone know how much pet insurance costs and what it does and does not cover? Is it worth it and can an animal be turned down or dumped when they become too old or sick?

The thing is the problem is not poor people putting animals down or dumping them because they cant pay a vet bill. It is people in general dont take pet ownership seriously and consider pets expendable.
Just the other day I saw an add getting rid of a GSD because the dog couldn't conceive. I've read too many adds where people are getting rid of their pets because they are moving and cant take pet with or having a baby and no longer have time for their pet, or the dog is chewing or has too much energy, or knocking the kids down.
I understand having to choose to have a pet euthanized rather than spending thousands on procedures, I have done it myself but I don't think those decisions are often taken lightly and I don't think that is a big problem. I think the bigger problem is not thinking pet ownership thru and considering ones future living situations. Income doesn't necessarily apply.

No I only had to take my smaller guy to the vet twice in 2 and a half years. Once for ear drops cost about $80 for the visit and drops and recently for skin allergies, cost about the same for steroids, a visit and a prescription for free antibiotics from the supermarket.

So how would they know if you've got the required rabies shot and tags???
