The only reason these drug cartels exist is to feed a market that wants their product.America is a very lucrative customer.Perhaps rather than a futile war on stopping drugs from entering the country more of an effort should be made to stop people using drugs in the first place.
America has not won a war since WW II. War on drugs? War on cancer? War on poverty? We are stinking addicted to war only we have no clue how to win one. Of course the big money is on the fighting a war, not winning one. As the old general said, "war is a racket". Does not matter which type.

America quite clearly won the war in Pacific theatre. We also won peace turning old enemies into consistent, reliable allies. Although for all intensive purposes, the Soviets won the combat operations in the European theatre, America won the peace in Europe.
Most importantly, both sides won the cold war. Not fighting is generally the ideal solution (and the drug war is no exception).
In my view, a pertinent question would be, CAN we win the war on drugs?
My answer to this would be a resounding "no".
