Either minority groups want in or out. If they want in they're welcome and we're here to help them. If they want out, they better be self-sufficient. Minorities don't get to be "sort-of" in and stir and break the pot.
Typical thinking of those who worship the establishment: take what we give you minorities and shut up.
The fact that American colonists were essentially thinking like the minorities you're putting down means little if you don't understand American principles.
You're certainly right. Right-wing religious universities are echo chambers that promote lunacy.
Yet right wing religious universities are just a tiny fraction of the overall halls of "higher learning" in the country, and religious loons at these schools are vastly outnumbered by the neo marxist nutjobs that have infected our systems. Far, far, far, too many of our schools (state and private) have been turned into progressive indoctrination centers, and often even moderate thought is regarded with much hostility (by these neo marxists) as wrongthink.
As a sort of moderate liberal, I feel a certain responsibility to distance myself from this silly academic dribble. Privilege theory is the new Marxism of the left. Much like the Marxists of 30-40 years, they have a taken some true and well meaning ideas and turned them into a dogmatic ideology that ultimately just undermines their cause.
It is very true that the world is far from a perfect meritocracy. Success in life is a mix of factors: hard work, personal responsibility, smart decisions and things we cant control: who are parents are, where we we were born, what we look like, what race/gender/sexual orientation we are, etc. We all have a mix of advantages and disadvantages. Some are tangible like the wealth and connections of our parents, others are less tangible (impact of positive/negative stereotypes.) Some disadvantages spring from deep historical injustice: black people being disadvantaged by the legacy slavery/Jim Crow, while others are more idiosyncratic: your dad was a drunk and your parents divorced or your parents immigrated from a poor county.
Since life isn't a perfect meritocracy, I think we should take some steps to level the playing field somewhat (a basic safety net, mass education/training, targeted efforts to recruit people from disadvantaged backgrounds, efforts to fight discrimination, prudent access to grants/loans for people who can't get family assistance for things like college, starting a business, buying a home, etc.)
Obviously, these aren't a silver bullet or sweeping as the professor would like. But, I think it has more chance of getting enacted and doing some good.
IMO, meritocracy, in it's purest form is perfect; it's people that are imperfect.
So far it has worked well for Asians and Europeans in America - quite a diverse group.
Do you think those groups are conspiring to keep the others down?
I'm sorry, but you're guilty of stereotypical thinking. You're lumping all Asians and Asian groups together as being successful. That's just not accurate. I worked with many students who were Asian who were in very poor families that got various forms of government assistance. You might do a little research and read articles like this one: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...=.e49e6df3dbea

Oh PUHLEEZE!
You know I meant IN GENERAL, don't you?
How often do you sharpen your razor to split those hairs?
I can attest to this. After military service, and some other gov't work, I had it in mind to become a 'regular' cop. I took the Civil Service exam twice, and both times I scored 100% without needing the extra 5 points that were/could be awarded for 'veteran's preference'. I have a relatively high IQ and I am well educated.
But I discovered that I could not get a Civil Service job. 'Affirmative action' ruled the hiring process and I did not fit the desired profile, others, far less qualified were hired instead. Later, in another capacity, I often found myself working with cops who were hired as a result of the 'affirmative action' program and I was appalled and dismayed at the performance I observed. Some of these cops were dismally poor at deductive reasoning skills, and had trouble spelling words with as few as two or three letters, more complicated words were well beyond their abilities. They could barely read, and barely write at a level that one might expect of a second-grader, reading their reports was often frustrating and dumbfounding. Dealing with them in person was equally exasperating.
I believe that this program, applied to this type of job, was one of the worst things that could have been done as it concerns the average American citizens, and is at least partly to blame for what I consider to be the horrendous state of 'policing' that exists today.
How hypocritical. You wouldn't have minded using the "veteran's preference", if needed, but think other preferences are bad.

I don't even bother to respond to arguments where posters have used phrases like "neo marxist nutjobs that have infected our systems". You're better left in your echo chamber CJ.

Yes. That's exactly what I meant about it being stereotypical thinking.
