They aren't mandated so I don't know how you expect me to answer this.

It's not "ONLY" doctors and nurses.

And that's why I oppose the OP's agenda-driven idea. Because if they were to get acceptance for "docs and nurses" then there would be a push to include EMT and orderlies, and then receptionists and janitors, etc. This is an attempt to get their foot in the door of the "student loan forgiveness" platform point and then expand it.

I don't think forgiving student loans would be fair to those who don't have debt.

How about a hazard thank you bonus to all?

Probably cost less than what the government has already given to oil companies, airlines, casinos, cruise lines, and other corporations "hurt" by the pandemic.

It is a nice thought, but most MD's/nurses/paramedics etc. know the risks and face life threatening situations on a daily basis.
Remember, just because everyone is focused on this pandemic, plenty of communicable diseases and dangers exist in the medical field, whether it be due to needle sticks, exposure to TB, AIDS, hepatitis, etc.

Plus paramedics can be injured/killed by crazy patients, dangerous roadside rescues, and what ever situation the patient has gotten themselves into. Not to mention wrecks on the road getting to and then transporting the patient.

The point being that many a retired MD and the like paid off their debt as part of what they knew it would take to become an XYZ.
So if you propose to pay off peoples debt now (just like with the notion of college debt forgiveness), how is that fair to everyone who worked hard to pay off theirs?

Sorry but while i appreciate what our medical people are doing I don't see why debt forgiveness should be something on the table. As a doctor/medical professional they come in contact with illnesses and contagions. The issues we are having is more of a unprepared infrastructure that can’t get the medical staff the proper PPE.

The GI Bill isn’t debt forgiveness

Actually I would bet the average school loan is more often wasted on useless classes than the GI Bill was. But; in any event, your argument is lost on me,since I am not talking about repayment to the government for welfare and other handouts. I am talking about people paying the debt they incurred for something they wanted, and purchased with zero up front service to the nation.

The GI Bill was a benefit offered as an incentive to military service pay. The service was completed to the nation before the GI Bill benefits were used. School loans are taken out before any service is provided to the nation, often taken out knowingly being well beyond the ability to repay, and often used as a four year party fund by kids who don't want to go out into the real world.

I am happy to have my tax money go to other veterans. I am not happy to subsidize some kid's four year college party. It they borrow it, they can repay it. If they want free college, let them join the military and do four years.

Hey - I'm just gettin' with the program! Since politicians are falling all over themselves to throw $$$ at people - why not try giving a few bucks to the few of us that actually contribute to society.

I appreciate what doctors and nurses are doing but these are highly paid professions. But that is their job. Plus why should someone still paying off their student loans get a break, whereas someone who has paid them off gets nothing. Are they not both at risk at their jobs? Really not fair.

On top of that there are entry level cashiers and clerks who have to work with contact of countless people a day making near minimum wage and everyone just forgets about them. They have little training at avoiding the virus and its pretty much the luck of the draw as to if they catch it or not. And lots of them are catching it.

Instead of giving out freebees to highly paid professionals. How about taking that money and giving grants to low wage workers who have had to work the past couple months in dangerous conditions. Perhaps they will get the leg up to better they lives with a good education. That would be a much better use of such money.
