In recent history when such an example of bad cops happens the worse of the protest and ensuing riots were generally limited to the communities in which the incident took place with shows of support in other cities. This is the first time something like this has happened after several months of lockdowns for COVID. These lockdowns have resulted in increased stress and domestic disturbance calls. They’ve also resulted in depression levels of unemployment as well as the loss of entertainment and recreational activities. This incident happens and it’s like the boiling pot has blown the lid and it’s all spilling out. All the pent up stress now has a direction to be released. It’s the combination of the video, being cooped up for months, stress at home, stress at work, and not having an outlet for such stress all reached the point of explosion. This doesn’t excuse the behavior of the rioters. Has there even been a similar situation (pandemic lockdown) that erupted into protest and riots from an unrelated incident?
IMO, definitely. Placing healthy young people on house arrest for months by extending the lockdowns was a major factor. At first it was just for 2-3 weeks to "flatten the curve" and then when it was obvious the hospitals were NOT going to be overwhelmed, our local county officer kept extending them with no end in time frame even talking about waiting until there was a vaccine to lift "shelter in place".
But I do think the rioting was a cumulation of other grievances. Why don't the people without access to health care riot? Or those burdened with student debt with no job prospects? Or the high costs of prescription drugs? Part timers not eligible for the stimulus checks? The Electoral college throwing the election to Trump?

Healthcare-hospitals cannot legally turn away people for not having health insurance and many cities have free clinics.
Student debt-Agree that university cost is outrageously high but no one is forced to attend university and no one is forced to take courses that are worthless towards getting a well paying job career. There are trade schools that offer training in jobs within a year or two and many are employed right out of school.
High cost of prescription drugs are a problem and I wonder how much of is is related to members of Congress (regardless of political party) receiving gifts (lobbying and campaign contributions) as well as pharmaceutical industry insiders working in and with the FDA.
Electoral College didn’t throw the election to Trump. The electoral college worked exactly as designed and this has happened several times before. It was designed so that large densely populated cities aren’t the sole decider of presidential elections. They do have enough electoral votes to make a difference. Without the electoral college presidential candidates would only campaign in major metropolitan cities like NYC, LA, Chicago, and others while completely ignoring the rest of the nation. Because of the electoral college they must try to appeal to people of all states since they’re running to represent the nation, not just certain cities.
