Yeah, I'm sure all those soldiers are using perfectly pristine language, right?
Im not referring to HOW they speak, but, what the ultimate goal is for them representing America . Do you think the Framers of the Constitution had the 'F' and 'S' words in mind when they drafted it ... so you could express yourself using vile and foul language thereby being a bad example for future generations ....Or, did they automatically assume that you would know using words like this in public was inherently wrong and didnt feel a need to specifically include them in the Constitution ? How do u think the Framers would view Americas 'progress' in this area ?
I'm actually 42 but I do believe its the religious right that likes to legislate things like blue laws preventing stores being open on Sunday, dry counties, gambling banning, outlawing abortions all because their religion calls for it.
Trying to outlaw words their religion says is bad is the next best thing.
Ok, on the other side of the coin...
-promoting abortions (which is just another view on the topic)
-not allowing army recruiters on college campuses
-Several liberal feminist groups oppose things that objectify women (like playboy, rap music etc.) which pretty much puts them with the religious types on that one.
-Trying to ban fraternities or certain frat events over thier "offensive nature" (I saw this one at my college)
-How about the use of certain words describing gays?
Heh, we are least tolerant of the sins we commit. Both sides have thier own view of what is *right* and actively seek to impose thier will on the rest of us.
So its alright to suppress ones moral conscience instead (?) . Do you think our brave men and women of all the Wars we've fought, died for our freedom to use vile and foul language in public because you want to ? What a complete twisting of what the Constitution was meant to be.
Well, then what freedom DID they fight and die for? Take Vietnam, for example. Or Panama. Or WWI. Which of our constitutionally-protected freedoms were they fighting and dying to preserve?
One Poster said Virginia has a ban on these words, and enforce it ; how do they handle it ? If it can be done in one State, then its possible for the Nation . Will it affect tight budgets ...?? Yes, but, America lacks basic common decency now from the purposeful twisting of freedom laws..and needs restoring. You dont really want your Grandchildren carrying on the a vile and filth legacy , do u ?
You're skirting around the question. How do YOU think it should be enforced? How do police catch people? Do we rely on neighbors snitching on one another Stalin-era style? What do we do with offenders? Throw them in prison? What kinds of sentences are these people looking at? Where is the money and resources going to come from to build new facilities to house the great influx of potty-mouths who have been arrested?
You seem to think that by banning a couple of 'bad' words then all civility and decency will be restored. What about rascism, sexism, pedophilia, rape, classism, blah blah blah...don't you think those things would still be around even if taboo cuss words weren't?
I'm sure it's been mentioned that even with the destruction of one word, people would just replace it with another. So , say, 'damn' would be the new 'f***' and then you'd have to outlaw that because now 'damn' is screwing everything up. And it repeats itself.
This is just another thread (aren't they all?) pandering to the church-lady mentality of those who think everyone (except themselves) need to be constantly scrutinized and regulated and all behavior (except their own) needs to be criminalized, and summary executions without trial of all offenders (except themselves).
Pimp used to have very bad connotations-------anymore, it refers to customizing a car/truck i.e. 'Pimp you ride'.
Redneck is no longer derogatory in most cases.
Qu**r used to be honorable-----------it meant odd or a situation going awry. Now even the younger Gays have appropriated it for Qu**r Nation.
Flip side: banning the S word would be extremely silly at best-----------even the phrase Bulls**t is acceptable in polite society in certain cases.
True. When the Enola Gay was selected as the plane from which the first atomic bomb was dropped in wartime, the only controversy which arose was between those in favor, and those opposed, to dropping the bomb....it had NO connotations either way in the matter of 'same sex marriage'.

The sure as hell didn't die so the offended could have select words criminalized

Moral conscience is not concrete. It depends on who you talk to and what they happen to believe. Some Muslims think Honor Killings are moral. Some hard core Christians think killing people who perform abortions is moral. I don't consider word usage a moral issue.
If you don't like it, separate yourself from it. Don't force everyone around you to think and feel like you do, it will create nothing but backlash.
