I don't miss TV one bit. I am less angry b/c of it -- watching angry pundits for hours on end has an effect on one's mood and blood pressure.

Once you're used to internet information, going back to pre packaged television information is not easy.

I feel like I'm losing out on real information everytime I watch tv. Because they aren't telling you the truth..
And, may I add, I hear the tube from another room and half the "News" is OLD news I'd read on the Internet days, weeks, even years ago! (The toxic flea collar thing & Slim Jims = latest examples on alleged local "news" big stories.)

When I moved, I asked the landlord to remove the boobed tube from the apartment, to give me more room. One less thing to dust!

What passes for (alleged) "news" these days should remind us of old shows such as Entertainment Tonight and A Current Affair. I think the (alleged) "News" broadcasts are what PUT these shows out of business!

The (alleged) World "News" my family watches -- I can't believe this junk qualifies as "World News" -- TRY WEEKLY World News for an upgrade! Bat Boy would be an upgrade.

True, a lot of those shows were silly. Alf eating cats from melmak wasnt shakespearean quality.

Also Small Wonder, Hogan Family, etc.

But those shows had good morals, they didnt take themselves too seriously. You didnt find yourself shouting at the tv (like you would some reality shows now). Those shows in the 80's didnt make you angry, they didnt raise your blood pressure.

True, Knight Rider, some of them dont stand up very well to the test of time. But they were quality in that you anticipated every episode. Remember when the KITT car was first destroyed? I think in a two part episode. That was the biggest thing in the world.

Other episodes really left you hanging on your seat, you'd talk about them.

The ads werent nearly as obnoxious then. The cialis, viagra ads make it unwatchable now. If the ads are bothering what you watch, you know its bad.

For some reason, tv now is more about control, aggression. Its more hypnotic.
Compare Oprah's show from 20 years ago vs now, which is more hypnotic?

oh lord. there is much more variety and more channels than before. if you lack that much discernment or get that distracted from watching what you want, it's you who are weak and have the problem. just change the frigging channel or watch tvland or a&e etc. or if you're that boring and narrowminded you can't find anything worth watching today but you only think the past has anything worth watching, it's you who are the idiot and not the television. my major complaint with cable is it doesn't have 'enough' channels. it would be great to get more international channels too. that said, of course there is stupid stuff on tv, there always was.

Everything is online now so why pay for cable?

I totally I agree with that. When I moved into my new apartment, I never bothered to buy a tv, so I watch all of my favorite shows online. I have found that this has made idle tv watching nonexistent for me. It's impossible to just sit there and click through channels. I'm not going to pretend that all tv is bad though. Mad Men is starting Sunday, and I can't wait to watch.

No, Rome ended after 2 seasons. That was about it. The Closer, perhaps.
I just finished Rome season 2. I picked it up at the library. They have a pretty decent size international movies section. You know, even if I had cable etc. I would be renting these.

I resemble this remark.

However, I do use my TV to watch Netflix. (Pandamonium, I'm in the middle of Rome 2.)

And I do watch the news, but probably would not watch it as much if I were single.

So you don't have to sit in your computer chair to watch it, dropping snack crumbs in your keyboard.

Yesterday I found a thread from someone who wanted to do away with their mailbox (read mail delivery).... now let's un-hook the tv...whats next.. the pc? I think tv exists for for the sole purpose of airing commercials. ...and NEVER watch the "news" before bedtime.
