Cell phones need to be completely illegal while driving. There also needs to be heavy penalties for doing so. It has been proven that talking on cell phones is worse than drunk driving.

Its no more dangerous to talk on a handsfree phone, then it is to talk to a passenger. Often, I find it more distracting to talk to a passenger, because of the temptation to make eye contact.

We should either ban all activity in the car, the radio, eating, talking on a phone, or ban none of them. They all are distractions. When you're ready to give up your radio, I'm willing to give up my phone.

"Drivers who talk on either handheld or hands-free cellular phones are as impaired as drunken drivers, according to experimental research conducted by Drs. Frank Drews, David Strayer, and Dennis L. Crouch of the University of Utah."

"So it means the risk of talking on a cell phone and driving is probably much higher than driving intoxicated because more people are talking on cell phones than driving while drunk."

I commented on this in another thread but to recap:

Some people, like my ex-fighter pilot friend can drive, talk on a cell phone, eat etc. and have no problems driving fine.

My other buddy can't do ANYTHING and drive ok...even talking with a passenger...he is so easily distracted.

So, rather than pass laws assuming that we are all of equal ability and revert to the lowest common denominator there is a simple solution. People that drive poorly, for whatever reason, will have more accidents and they will pay higher costs. Those that swerve on the road and make other traffic violations due to poor driving should be pulled over and ticketed. In some cases, people causing bad accidents that were proven to be "impaired" by checking text records, testing them for drugs\alchohol etc. are charged with crimes.

It's elegantly simple.

Me personally, I will RARELY talk on the cell phone while driving and text only if stopped at a light but hey, I have a $2500 deductible on my daily driver so even a little bumper tap is going to cost me big.

Talking on the phone is one thing, but I cannot believe that there are people who actually text while operating a motor vehicle. Why not read a book or knit a few lines on your scarf, too? While you're driving, you should be focused on driving.

Exactly.

The unfortunate truth, though, is that you just can't outlaw stupidity. You can outlaw certain manifestations of it, but people will just go out and find new ways to be stupid.

That said, I think it should be illegal to be on the cell phone - and/or especially texting - while driving. It has been proven to be insanely dangerous.

We are dealing with a lot of people who couldn't walk down the street and chew chewing gum at the same time trying to drive a car, talk on a phone, text, put on make up, and eat their lunch, all at the same time. As a result people die and that includes children. Imagine a child killed in a car accident because the fault driver was texting, "I'm driving on elm st, opps!"

When people will not act responsibly then the government must take action in order to protect the majority.

I agree with this, you shouldn't text while driving. They are working on a voice to text option that will make it safer, but as for now, no.

They only did the study for drivers from 18 to 26. They have some of the highest accident rates outside of teens, so they are already driving poorly. Also, they aren't saying which handsfree device they tested with. Was it wired, was it wireless, did it play over the stereo?
