I've got lots of old tapes from the years when I worked night shift and would tape my favorite programs. They are taking up precious shelf space but I don't know if they can be recycled but I'm betting that someone on this forum can tell me.
There are plenty of places to send your used (or even new) VHS cassettes, some you pay to get rid of them (like GreenDisk) and others are donation to charity free except shipping... just search "VHS Recycle Donation". When I downsized I sent 4 large boxes of cassettes to a local charity that hires disabled and handicapped, and a big box of CD/DVDs to an animal shelter's resale shop.
You could ask your Chamber of Commerce or fire Station what they recommend but i suspect unless you box em up and send them somewhere i dont think theres much recycling going on in Floyd county.

Any insight offered is much appreciated.

Convert them to DVD or digital file on your hard drive.

You got that right. We don't even do brown or green glass here, just clear. Anything that qualifies as hazmat - batteries, paint, etc has to wait for an annual day in another county.
I'm hanging on to the 20 or so commercially produced movies (good for those times when I'm under the weather, just want to veg out and even reading a book is too much) since I have a dual deck but the home made tapes of TV shows that aired while I was off working evenings are not things I want to see again.
Also have a dozen or more of new unused tapes. Same thing with audio, both home recorded and new blanks. I'll box them up and put in the garage to free up the in-house shelf space for now and in the spring find a permanent disposition for them.
Oh man definitely donate or sell them. I'd kill to get some more VHS tapes. I've about had it with stupid DVDs.
Whats wrong with DVD's? They are far superior to VHS cassettes.
